THUNDER BAY -- Nobody was injured after a float plane crashed in the harbour Sunday afternoon.
Just after 2:30 p.m. the small plane capsized in Lake Superior just off the shoreline as it appeared to take off.
The Coast Guard was first on scene and was able to rescue the pilot, who was the lone occupant of the plane and was uninjured. Police, paramedics and firefighters were also quickly on scene.
Witness Wendy Jaun was walking around the Fisherman’s Park area just off Grenville Avenue when she saw the plane inside the break wall.
“We saw a small plane about to take off,” she said. “It got dipped and made lot of noise and banked severely to the right.”
At that point she rushed towards the water and saw the plane again.
“By the time we came to the end of the dock and saw the plane it was submersed upside down in the water. The person was sitting on top of the plane,” Jaun said.
Her husband immediately called 911 but was told responders were already on the way and they showed up almost as soon as he hung up.
Police officials said the plane was retrieved from the lake.

Really great weather????? It was very windy and gusty today in Geraldton with strong winds out of the southwest gusting to 38 knots at times. Not sure what Thunder Bay was like but I think I would have stayed home today in Geraldton.

Yeah, I did a trip around noon to a lake just NW of Thunder Bay and the wind was screaming. The caravan is pretty easy to to turn on the water and I couldn't get it turned out of wind. Blue skies but not nice float flying weather.

38 knots???
That might explain a few things...
Weather seemed fine at my place, but I'm a bit out of town. Plane is C-FVGB, recently switched owners this spring to a numbered company. They pulled it out of the water pretty quick!

Saw the plane out of the water. Pilot was coming in for landing and had touchdown, just when the floats started to settle a wing started going up and he wasn't able to stop it. Looks like he was landing in a kinda crappy spot where the wind can play tricks on you and gets pretty turbulent due to the elevators nearby. Pilot got out through the window before it sunk. His cell phone still worked for a bit and he got through to 911 himself before it kaffed. He had egress training which most likely really helped.
Physical damage was minimal do to the flip, until it was towed and taken out. The front of the floats banged against a steel dock overnight and the right wing tip and bottom cowl are shot due to taking it out of the water. Front float compartments are bashed right in and shot on both sides!
Was a beautiful machine, only had 25 hours on the engine!!!
Pretty much the dream machine I want when I retire!!!
Back in the day, we use to toss out the cylinders in cases (hit the water running and hot) like this, I'm assuming that is still done, so it's gonna be a hell of a touch to repair it. Good chance it will be written off by the time everything is tallied, but will be a good candidate for somebody to do a rebuild. Hell I'd buy it!
TSB is chalking the accident up to wind and pretty much leaving it at that.

Does anybody know if the pilot name initial was K.S. I ask because I know him from way back when. I heard he has a 180 on floats somewhere in NW Ont.
Thank you
stay cool
PM me if that is your preference

A privately-registered float-equipped Cessna 180H, C-FVGB, was landing inside the breakwater at Thunder Bay harbour (CKE6) into wind. As the aircraft touched down, a wind gust lifted the left wing. The pilot could not counter the roll with control inputs, and the right wingtip contacted the water. The aircraft pitched forward and overturned. The pilot, who had received egress training, successfully egressed from the inverted aircraft without injury and was rescued by a Coast Guard vessel. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
