Does anyone know how often the Aviation Medical Review Board meets? My medical got sent off to them and I'm here hoping I don't need to wait another 4 months
I don't believe that they meet per se - it's a board of different specialists. If you have a condition related to, for example, psych, they send it to the psychiatrist for a final determination.
Thanks for the info, Bede. I've been hearing the wildest timeframes - from once a season to every two weeks. No clue what's even going on up there at TC..
I wouldn’t count on a quick response. One of my friends has been waiting over a year for a response and was told by transport to stop inquiring or he would go to the bottom of the list. And he isn’t the only one in that situation. A group of airline pilots who have been left out to dry by transport regarding their medicals have been speaking to lawyers about their options.
I don't think there can be any predictions.... There is plenty of guidance and precedent for your condition, so it could be as easy as the RAMO taking the specialist's assessment and making sure your numbers are within their guidelines. This could be within a month now, but, since it's your initial Cat 1, it will probably take a little longer and they'll likely have their own cardio do a review. Maybe 2-3 months tops if that's the case. I think their main bottleneck is availably of specialists in different specific regimes, such as neurology.
To give you some hope, I've been fighting my own battle as I mentioned on your other thread. I had to go through a raft of tests and and meet 11 criteria that TCM directed, all with absolutely stellar results (Many studies show that being an athlete through your teens and 20's carries through very positively for your lifetime even if your activity level drops to average with age).
With the entire 25 page package assembled and covered with a letter from my specialist, I walked it into my CAME on Tuesday for them to send it in. On Friday afternoon I had a fit assessment and letter from the RAMO in my TC mailbox. 4 days.... must be some sort of record. Nice to see, given it took 6 months just to get all the testing done once the treatment was finished!
Thanks for your perspectives everyone. Dan, the aviation gods must have been on your side... I am truly in the 8th layer of bureaucratic hell right now..
I just received a call like ten minutes ago from a No Caller ID and it turned out to be the TC Ontario Regional Office, but not from one of the usual customer service agents. The lady on the phone seemed to be more knowledgeable about the whole process and here's what she said:
- The AMRB convenes at the headquarters in Ottawa.
- The AMRB meets as a board rather than individual specialists, which I find real bureaucratic because why would I need a neurologist looking over my file if this is a cardio problem? This is also probably why they take forever to meet.
- No one at any of the regional offices will know anything about the AMRB meeting schedule.
- A TC assessor had sent off my file to the AMRB. I guess they either were not satisfied or lacked the knowledge to make an informed decision? Hoping it's the latter.
- I will only be contacted if a decision is made or if they need more information.
- I could be waiting "one to three months" (yikes) depending on when the AMRB meets.
- I will get an update on myTC the day after the AMRB makes up their minds.
- They can't rush the file nor see any updates after it is sent to the AMRB; only the AMRB will be in the loop.
- I should contact them again in a month's time if there are no updates.
Oh well... I don't even know what to say. I'm trying to be patient but it's hard when there's literally weeks between communications and my dream and career are all banking on this medical. Nothing more frustrating than TC practically telling me they can't do anything and I'll just have to wait till the specialists get off their butts.

Thanks for reading!
Hi, is this an initial or renewal? Your CAME would know the standards and if you had no issues during the medical there’s probably no reason to have concerns.
