Human Factors For Aviation Book

Post by xplane »

Just wondering if the Human Factors publications by transport canada are any good? I heard good things, but they are from 1999 so might be a bit outdated.

Also, does the content in the Advanced Handbook cover everything in the other ones or do I need to buy all 3?

https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/public ... s-brochure

There are 3:
  • Human Factors For Aviation - Basic Handbook - TP 12863E
https://www.libgen.is/book/index.php?md ... 7015E92D33
  • Human Factors For Aviation - Advanced Handbook - TP 12864E
  • Human Factors For Aviation - Instructor's Guide - TP 12865E

They are good but perhaps more importantly they are what the TC exam writers pull their questions from.

If I didn't care about the TC exams and my goal was just to learn, what resources would you recommend?

I've been using RCAF Weather Manual and Pilottraining.ca

Then I suggest a more modern publication.

TC historically has been two or more decades behind any new research or technology.

I had fixed card ADF questions on my ATPL exams early to mid 2010s. No one is shooting NDB approaches using fixed card ADFs…. Ever.

If you are interested in human factors, there are many studies, which have evolved themselves into : scientific papers peer reviewed in credited journals, and even YouTube videos from aviation experts, not to mention countless new publications. TC has just only realized that GPS is a thing maybe a decade ago. Try another source

The Human Factors Instructor's Guide is available on the TC website for free in PDF format. You'll likely have to dig for it or email their publications desk, but it is there.

The previously posted recommendation for peer reviewed papers is ideal - it's the most up to date information you'll get. However, if you want to start with a book then read Human Factors in Aviation edited by Salas & Maurino... each chapter is written by researchers with expertise in those individual sub-disciplines.

Thanks Daniel! I was actually able to find the Basic Handbook (TP 12863E) and uploaded it to Library Genesis so that everyone can have access to it. Here is the link if anyone from the future wondering:
https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=8C ... 7015E92D33

The publications desk wasn't able to find the Instructor handbook. They gave me a number and no one answers.

This page says that a PDF version exists somewhere in the TC cloud.

https://publications.gc.ca/site/eng/9.8 ... ation.html

You used to be able to click a "View PDF" link on that page and view a really high quality version of it, similar to how they publish the Flight Training Manual for free.

Hi Daniel! I was able to find the Human Factor Instructor Guide PDF. Any chance there was a similar for the "advance" one?
