He has a long ways to go for any sort of record. Unless we're talking about a local record. Not unusual for these guys to take off in the morning and land in the evening. Seems it's a particularly nice day in Southern Alberta

Nice!
Do they have radios on board with that long a battery pack? I can imagine that for cross border flying you'd need something?

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

You'd be surprised how long the batteries are good for in these sailplanes. Most of the instrumentation doesn't use much juice and can be easily turned off when not needed. Most competition level sailplanes at my club don't have solar panels and these guys are wheels up mid morning and aren't landing until dusk. That being said, you can add solar panels to a glider to help with battery life. They're usually placed right behind the canopy. Another neat thing about sailplanes is that some are equipped with leading edge cleaning devices to wipe off bugs mid flight. A slight L/D advantage may make the difference between winning or losing.
