Taxes

Post by cyyz »

So I want my employer to stop giving away my money to the Federal Gov't the old people and the unemployed....

How can I go about telling my employer from stopping such payments/garnishments?

I want him to stop collecting federal taxes off my pay. Any way to do this?

Ofcourse I'll pay it when tax time comes, I just figure I could make atleast 4% interest on what I'm having taken off from me...

Hypothetically, if the employer takes my money, gives it to the gov't and he didn't take enough I need to pay the tax man in the end anyways. So, wtf, if he didn't touch the money in the first place it could have been earning interest to pay the gov't what wasn't taken, meaning I wouldn't be out money in the end...

So, how do I stop the garnishments? Or anyway to reduce them atleast?

Contact Revenue Canada. They can allow this and usually give you a letter for your employer.

Now if you want to be a sneaky bum go find a good tax lawyer, set up a trust, become a contractor and “donate” 100% of your earnings to said trust :)

Actually that can't be done. I've tried that one.

In you have more than one employer you can ask that taxes not be removed from your secondary pay cheque.

The only wiggle room you have with your primary pay is with RRSP or charitable contributions. You can request to have the income tax reduced as you will be getting it back at the end of the year because of your deductions. You need documentation for this one though.

I am not an accountant nor a lawyer. So I am sure there are plenty more "grey" areas in the tax law. Paying someone to figure them out for you will probably eat up that 4% interest.

You can always have your permanent residence in Turks and Caicos. Some guys make that work. But again the 4% would probably be eaten up in travel. Unless, of course, you make 100 mil a year. Then the numbers might work in your favour.

Go to payroll and ask for a TD1 deduction form and be creative. This can reduce that amount of tax that comes off every cheque. Tuition, RRSP, dependents, anyting you can make work on that form will make a difference.

WetJet,

How Is it possible to have residency in one town, but to work in a different city or town? How does that work?
Can you phone into CRA and change your residency? Does my employer have to approve this situation? Does the employment have to be temporary, say like, going to work, in NWT, for several months, but returning to your usual employment?

CYYZ you can ask that your tax portion be reduced based on expected deductions, just tell them you expect to deduct all your taxes and not have to pay any. Should be easily done. When I was a student and only working part time I had zero taxes taken off of my paycheck because of tuition I knew there was no way in god green earth I would be making enough to have to pay taxes!

Chantal: Your residency is what you can justify to the government. If you live in Calgary and work in NWT for 4 months than go ahead and claim 4 months for norhtern living allowance. Mailing address is completely separate.

Here are two forms that will also help.

The first one will make every paycheque bigger if you have any additional deductions. It reduces the amount of tax that comes off every cheque but will not increase you tax return.

The second form can give you a bigger tax refund. For example if your company does medevac flights you need a car to work since you can't run to the airport in 30 minutes. Does your company give you a car allownace? I doubt it - so the car is a "condition of employment" and you should therefore deduct mileage. Internet is probably a requirement as you need to see GFA's before the flight, etc. This has to be filled out by you and your employer.
