Training bond for an endorsement course?
Anyone here ever had to sign a bond for a type course by their employer?

I think the other AME that works with me had to pay most of the course cost when our emplyoer sent him on a citation course. Funny thing is the guy wasn't doing it just cause he wanted to have it, but because without that endorsement, we wouldn't be able to get the damed things in the shop.

Most employers I know of willingly pay for the course, because it's in their best interest for you to have it. On the other hand, I've seen some employers try to tell you that since you aren't at work, we won't pay your wages while you're gone, but then you tell them that you won't go on the course, and they change there mind quickly

I don’t pay for anything unless I leave within 12 months and it’s prorated. They are putting me on the course, paying my salary, per diem, travel and accommodations. They even pay a standby rate of 8hrs a day straight time on the weekends you’re not working and away from home. I was just curious because I’ve never signed before for training and was wondering if it was a common practice, nothing more than that.

The two places I have worked at make you sign a one or two year contract. But do not have to pay a cent unless you leave within the contract period. Most places are like this from what I have heard. I agree with the above that it is in the companies best interest to do it this way.

I'd definately have no problem signing something like that. Only reason I could see for not signing, is if you didn't plan to stick it out for the year. Only thing to be careful of, is what all they put on the contract. They shouldn't be making you sign for the salary or per diem, only the actual costs of the course, travel and accomodation.

I have been around the patch a few times. (30 years twisting wrenches)
In my experience, it's normal to sign a 1 year training bond. It's not a bad thing, the employer just needs to get his moneys worth.
But I do have an issue with AMEs paying for type courses. If we go down that road, we could probably expect to be paying for the courses in the future and that is a load of crap.
