Category 1 medical for ATC
Hey everyone,
I have a CAT 1 medical and have applied for ATC, I was wondering if it is ok to use it for ATC and in the back the validity of it says 12 months for pilots and 24 months for ATC. Can anyone confirm this because I have heard a CAT1 is only valid 1 year no matter what!

Re: Category 1 medical for ATC
It's still good for ATC. I believe the terms of keeping the CAT1 license are the same. In ATC they reimburse your medical fees, so you might as well keep it renewed yearly.

Thanks NJ, I was just curious because in back of the medical it says 1 year for pilots, 24 months for ATC, flight engineers.

Newwave.
One of the guys in my unit is in the same boat. A class one Medical is good for 24 months when used for ATC. The other aviation licence you have it for is good for the applicable validity period for that licence, but it is valid with an ATC licence for 24 months. NJ is correct in that Nav Canada does pay for medicals, but only those required.
So if you're under 40 and have a Class 1 Nav Canada will only pay for one medical every two years, because it's valid for two years for ATC.
Clear as mud??

'preciate the replies guys.
So if I understand correctly a qualified controller can use a CAT1 medical and get it renewed every 2 years?

Re: Category 1 medical for ATC
So if I go to a CAME for renewal and tell him I want to downgrade to a CAT2 is there a delay or technically could one go to work the next day? Just curious
Re: Category 1 medical for ATC
A valid LVC is a valid LVC - don't matter what you are renewing. Upgrading from 2 to 1 might incur a delay - but down grading from 2 to 1 - especially at the one year mark - should
not cause any issues.

I maintain my cat 1 every year (under 30) and navcan pays for it.So if you're under 40 and have a Class 1 Nav Canada will only pay for one medical every two years, because it's valid for two years for ATC.
Re: Category 1 medical for ATC
For the past 10 years, I have been going in every 2 years, getting a class 1 medical. I have had no issues with TC or NAVCANADA. Never had a problem renting an airplane(for private purposes only). Nav pays for my medicals (and all required extra tests), and if I ever do go back to flying part time for fun and fortune, I'll renew the class 1 on my own dime every other year(or 6 months, coming up way too soon!!!).
