Wedding onboard a Canadian North 737 at FL320

Post by What Flaps? »

I have to say this is a new one. I bet the Edmonton Airport's did not let them fly out of the CYXD
Newlyweds exchange sky-high vows

Two Edmonton area pilots had the wedding of their dreams; they tied the knot 32,000 feet above the city in Boeing 737 Saturday.

It started off as a casual idea that was passed around in conversation, but after the bride and groom delved deeper into the logistics of making it happen they soon found they'd be able to have their high flying wedding.

"The whole thing about the church and the park came up and then I said what about in an airplane," said groom Michael Griffith.

"He asked I wonder how much it would cost to charter a 737 and I said for what, and he said to get married on," said bride Martha Bull.

About 70 guests took their seats in the aircraft as it circled around Edmonton for an hour during the ceremony.

Aviation officials say there have been several weddings in smaller planes, but they say this is the first wedding, they know of, to take place in a Boeing 737.

The pilots met while working for Servisair, a ramp handling company based at the Edmonton International Airport.

"They are both so interested in flying, that it's very fitting for...both of them," said the bride's mother Regina Bull.

The newlyweds also have an aviation-themed reception planned, complete with an airplane cake top.

I think the article is wrong in saying they are both pilots...i heard something different, being from Edmonton i have seen the guy and believe he still works ground at servisair. Once again media not getting their stories straight.

Looks like it was about 1 hour of flying.

I would guess about $5000 in just fuel alone. Throw in another $5000 for other expenses so roughly about $10 000 for the hour long trip. But not sure what the going rate for a 737-200 would be.

Actually, I am aware of it happening at least once before.
A good friend of mine who was a pilot for Eastern Provincial Airlines, (Before they were swallowed up by Canadian Airlines) got married on board a company 737.
I wasn't there for the ceremony, but I believe that it was done during a regular scheduled flight, so the cost of chartering the entire plane was avoided.

Although not mentioned on the news, Canadian North only charged them for the fuel. The crew donated their time and the other associated fees were waived.

A Gulfstream co-pilot for North American Airlines got married in a Learjet circling over Banff.
Naomi Whelan, wife of TV sportscaster, the late Ed Whelan of Stampede Wrestling fame, performed the ceremony. It was a very dignified affair. Naomi Whelan is a Justice of the Peace and is often sought after to perform marriages.

And no! the marriage was not consumated in the Lear.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.
