Does anyone have a second job or career, own a business?
Lets hear about it. I'm thinking I would really like to get into something outside aviation as a second source of income and for general interest. Personally I've been becomming more and more interested in Green home building/reno's and off grid homes.

Don't know much about home stuff (one quick look at the 'ol crapshack will tell you that).
I myself still do the odd long haul trucking run. I used to do it full time, and when the weather's good I still enjoy a nice trip. By the end of it I miss my flying job so it works out just fine.

Who do you work for RFN? I used to drive and might be looking for work too.PM me.
Re: Does anyone have a second job or career, own a business?
I drove for T & T Trucking Ltd. out of YWG.
Usually overnight runs into Saskatchewan. They don't give me the volume of work they once did and I'm probably done there.
I also did a couple of runs for Turk Enterprises out of St. Andrew's MB. Great equipment, good pay, but you work for it.
I'm actually looking to switch companies.

deflux,
i haven't bothered to even start researching a trade yet but do you think it would be possible for someone with a full time flying job to get a trade? i assumed that the in class component of a trade would be challenging to schedule.

Mattedfred,
after starting this thread, I did some research about colleges and taking courses online, apprentice or part time studies at the local schools here in southern ONT. I was supprised to find the number of part time programs available, especially in the electrical and plumbing (lots of apprenticeships avail). I have some info on order for GGN College on general carpentry. I may even look into what’s involved in becoming a general contractor.

I am a corporate pilot with a part-time contract working for an airline doing office work. It's sometimes difficult to manage both but overall it's been an overwhelmingly positive situation. What I'd like to do is get into real estate, and I understand getting a real estate licence isn't overly difficult or time consuming. My biggest challenge is that I'm pretty much always on call, so I'm not sure if I can properly build a part-time real estate career right now or if I need to wait until I have more time at my disposal.

I own a string of whorehouses. Would you be interested in a franchise?

I did my apprenticeship and everything the traditional full time way but these days I would be really surprised if there wasn't a way you could work it into your schedule...mattedfred wrote:deflux,

Check out a local college website. My goal is to fly full time at some point and just leave my trade as something to fall back on. Or maybe do some side jobs to pay the bills when I am a starving instructor.

Not interested in a franchise but would be willing to work as a "man whore"... strictly hetero though.Doc wrote:I own a string of whorehouses. Would you be interested in a franchise?

With a new job that I plan to stay at for a long time I have received a nice schedule with half the year off. I am looking into getting into Welding. I understand there is a ton of different tickets available. I would really like to get into custom fabrication at say a performance auto shop. Would be nice to have a little extra cash, and would be great for at home projects.

Re: Does anyone have a second job or career, own a business?
I was silly and paid a ton of money for a second career in aviation. Now my company can work me twice as hard for half as much.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

I'm thinking about becoming a missionary. I always liked the look of "missionary style"

Drinking lots of coffee lately, at a nice safe jungle desk, wishing I were flying......

I have a marriage consultant business that solves the problem of your wife catching you using a whorehouse, after you and your wife complete my marriage counseling you are both happy because she ends up working there and the family income triples.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I'll try to post somthing that KAG was actually looking for.
I'm do research at a university on the side and am finishing a graduate biophysics degree. It's a nice out if things tank in this industry.

In Chinese chaos and opportunity are the the same word. There's going to be even greater uphevels than of late because of the monitary crisis that has the world in it's grip.
The aviation job market has plummited down the crapper with the all the money.
A needed trade or second profession is piece of mind.
Cat I do book keeping and can keep both sets of your books if you'd like

Re: Does anyone have a second job or career, own a business?
I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about websites or internet businesses. What about something as simple as surveys and data entry online? Anyone actually ever done that or know anyone that has? I know it's internet shit, but I have heard of some people who make a decent buck on it. And the good thing is, you don't have to leave the house.

I design, build and host websites in my spare time. It works out well for me because I can make cash money doing it, and because I don't have the overhead that many companies do, I can do it for a bit cheaper as well. Plus it's a completely different type of work then aviation.
