Muskoka, Pembroke, Maniwaki, Ottawa, Cornwall, Peterborough

Post by mathewc »

Those are the airports I will be flying to tomorrow and Friday. Any comments on any of those airports listed? Any good places to stop for lunch/dinner?

Thanks!

CYOW is not real friendly to little airplanes.

There's the NavCan fee, the airport fee, and
the FBO ramp fee, which totalled up is over
$100.

If you must fly into CYOW, land at the north
field (right traffic 22, remember) and get gas
at the Ottawa Flying Club.

Unless you really want to land at CYOW, I'd
recommend you land at CYRP. Don't need
to talk to ATC, 24 hr self-serve fuel, save
the $100 in fees.

+1

From Maniwaki stop at Gatineau and see Vintage Wings, then Rockcliffe or Smithfalls.

Maybe Kingston, Picton, both good for meals in town, before Peterborough.

Thanks, I switched from the international airport to Rockcliffe to avoid all the fees, plus it works out it is closer to the place we are staying too!

I'd say the same. Avoid YOW like the plague, save your money.

No meals at Muskoka without walking out to the highway. If need be, the folks at Air Muskoka are real friendly and you can cut through there and walk out to the restaraunt on the highway, halfway down the runway. Was there yesterday picking up my plane from annual and some folks out of Brampton on amphibs did exactly that. Hopefully the weather holds. Have fun.

Dunno about CYRO, but a couple days ago I bought
100LL at CYSH it was $1.21 per liter all taxes in.

P.S. I just finished writing cheques today to NavCan
for ATC fees and the Ottawa airport authority for
landing fees, totalling over $320, and that doesn't
include a nickle of ramp fees from the FBO's that
I've paid this year.

Last time I stopped at the CYOW Esso Avitat, I
bought $400 of jet-a (admittedly not very much,
just a top-up) and they still nicked me $105 for
a ramp fee. Ouch. I didn't even get kissed first,
let alone dinner and a movie.

CYOW is not real friendly to general aviation. Stay
away if you can.

Ouch is right..what type of aircraft as the price is usually by the footprint of the plane.

Couple yrs ago there was a neat restaurant right at the airport in Maniwaki. Should still be there, can't remember their hours though.

Well there ya go Hedley, when you play with toys like that you should be able to, and one would expect that you could, afford the 'fees'.

I suppose. But even in a piston aircraft, I still seem
to get nicked $100 at CYOW when all the fees get
totalled up, for a quick-turn.

http://www.pittspecials.com/images/421_banked.jpg

Given the choice of two airports, if one of them is
$100 cheaper to land at, guess which I'm going to
choose?

And that doesn't even take into account the cost
of fuel, which can vary incredibly from one airport
to the next.

Good point. The airport sticks their hand in your wallet when you land, the fuelers take their cut and then NavCan grabs what left to grab as a take off fee. The sad thing is that each one argues that it's just a small amount and if you can afford to fly then you can afford to pay...total BS. Enough small nibbles add up to one big bite very quickly.

Awww, YOW isn't so bad from 2000' over the button as you're heading 8 more miles to land at YRO for free.

Heck they even give you some radar support and don't charge anything to watch the 'buses landing below you.

Great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to land there.....

Actually, CYOW is a great place to fly out of - the
ATC folks in the tower are the best. The stories
I could tell ...

But it sure ain't cheap. It's sort of like buying
all your groceries at the corner store - convenient,
but surely not the most economical.

Yeah I was just being silly. I actually love flying into there. Particularly doing touch and go's on the South field where they have you do some pretty neat things to keep the traffic flowing like immediate right turns off of 32 at 300 AGL and overflying the terminal to come back into a right base for 25. All the while landing RJ's in sequence. My flight school is based at YRO and I believe has an agreement in place therefore I never see the actual fees, but I also don't full stop.

One good thing about getting your groceries at the corner store in QC is you can get your beer there too!
Too bad that's the only good thing about it...

Yes, but the scenery is much nicer at the ESSO!

I was just in CYOW a couple of weeks ago with my 185 & stayed at the Shell for 2 days on the way east & overnight on the way west.Called ahead & they got a great hotel for the wife & I & a car for a good price & on the way back didn't charge me for overnight as a repeat customer.Gas @ $2.25 was the most expensive of all of Canada & they apologized for it.Total fees from nav canada was $30.01 for landing twice.ATC was as friendly as you could get& staff at Shell couldn't do enough to make me comfortable, same service as 11 years ago on my last journey from BC to PEI & back.Forgot to mention that when I called ahead the night before from Sault, they advised me not to come after 10pm as the call out fee was $100,nice head's up.

Just got back from the trip and it was amazing! Flying form Muskoka to Maniwaki made me a little nervous since there is nothing there except lakes and forest. Maniwaki was a cool little airport with beautiful scenery. CYRO was really cool with all the GA aircraft there. The best part was the friendliness of all the people we met at all the airports along the way. Makes me proud to be part of this community!
