Changes at AvCanada???

Post by robbreid »

I can't help but notice the following thread;

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=67786

More noticable is the fact in one day it had over 600 views, and unfortunately being blocked, most of
those 600 viewers never had the opportunity to respond.

I understand AvCanada was formed in Calgary to assist local aviation community job searches, and AvCanada has
now expanded to include all of Canada - an excellent service to the Canadian Aviation community and the founder
of AvCanada deservingly should be very proud of his site.

It is I and We, the members of AvCanada that have made this the premier aviation site in Canada - and the forums -
the premier Canadian forums.

I'm curious about the commitment by moderators, and especially the administrator of this site, if they actually care
about the forums, because it's very hard to tell. Are the forums just a bi-product of AvCanada's interest's; job postings?
Or is there genuine concern over the content, quality, and value of the posts.

I ask because I note some of the more interesting topics seem to be getting moved to never never land, which again
as a member, I find very disheartening. There is so much that can be learned by an accident, and even some of the negative posters on AvCanada - are still very knowledgeable and from time to time post some very interesting aviation tidbits.

So why all the disgruntled viewers?, and what can be done to make this a positive experience for most of the members??

Any positive suggestions, that could be posted would be appreciated by me for one.

It would be a shame to block this thread, or move it, as I'd truly like to hear some commitment from the mods, and some positive suggestions by the members.

Thank you for your time.

The number of views was probably because of the title.

Maybe it's just me and the original poster, but Whats up with the Mod's,
seems clear to me? Enough has been said recently both here which gets
blocked and at pprune.

Actually kinda sad you'd have to go all the way to the UK to post to be
able to speak freely.

However rather than travel down that road, I'm still hoping for some positive
feedback.

I'm surprised they don't delete or move more of my stupid posts or threads.

Also, keep in mind- Avcanada is ONE person's website and he can do whatever he wants with it. Period.

I agree. Frankly, I'm surprised that the aviation community contains so many whiners. Oh, wait a minute.

As we say in my workplace, "you are free to complain, but if you're going to bitch without presenting a solution or volunteering to fix it, you're part of the problem." Not a bad way to look at this site. Seems to me more effort is spent complaining and whining than posting good content.

Which is why I commented in the first place, I found the German mid-air accident and video, along with the Reno
accident - both from this weekend to be two of the stand out threads - however with that said, I'm curious how long
the 'Moved to' remains, because I think it was very cool for the mods to post that.

I don't know the owners background, but he is at least very serious to have created this site in the first place.

He may have the final say, but we as members, and readers, really make it what it is.

In the end, I agree, you can't make everyone happy, and as the owner of the site, he must do what is right
for him.

I'm just asking how we, as members, can come together with the owner so we can all benefit from AvCanada,
and in doing so, asking fellow members for positive suggestions, as opposed to negative one :)

Actually, I should say how we as members can work with the mods, instead of against, an make this a better
quality forum, than it already is.

On a funny note, I just actually read thru the thread on pprune about AvCanada for the first time,
and the thread itself imploded from bickering!!

So to end on a positive note, it can't be easy being a mod, because no matter what you do or don't
do, your going to tick someone off. So I'll assume it is somewhat of a thankless task.

So for that, I say to the Mod's thank you, because though AvCanada isn't perfect, it's still pretty good!!
A lot of that credit I must say directly because of the Mod's - it would get out of hand fast without them!!

Thanks

Robbreid,

This sounds suspiciously like a complaint thread, and you have already had your quota of starting a complaint thread this month - To All the Haters on AvCanada.

To Everyone:

Please take the time to go to the Board Index and see all the different subforums. Some of these subforums may seem *NEW* to longterm members!! We encourage you to browse and post in all the subforums!!!

If you cannot find a thread you started or contributed to please try the View Your Posts link, also at the top right.

We also suggest you do not limit yourself by browsing the subforums individually. Either the View Active Topics link at top left, or View New Posts link at top right will give you a much wider and more interesting scope of what is being discussed. Browsing this way will help you help us to expand the board and keep the subforums from being the "never never land" you accuse them of being.

Thank you!

quality forum, than it already is.

I was going to send this to you in PM, but will post it here instead.

I won't speak for the other Mods, they are more than capable of doing that themselves, but I know for a fact that we all try very hard to make this site one that is usable by a broad range of users from young to old, is conducted within the rules of the board as laid out by the Administrator, and we all spend a great many hours of our own time to do so.

I have posted several threads over the years urging the usership to not only respect the site, but contribute to it in a positive manner - I'm starting to feel that should be on my grave stone. The last attempt was in the Air Canada forum after a minor melt-down after a particular topic had rendered it almost useless. I see the users have gone back to posting respectfully and that the content is back up to where it should be. Its the users of that forum who've made the change, not me.

The problem is, we have a usership that logs on for a variety of reasons and in a variety of states... There is no way a handfull of Mods can read all the posts each day, spend time deciding which ones are of value and which ones might be worth trashing if they are borderline. Therefore we do the best we can to stay within Joe's wishes - sometimes we make mistakes, just like everyone else.

Where I have an issue is with the responses to these mistakes or how queries are made of the Mods around here. Threads belittling the Mods, rants against the site, and nasty PM's are not the way to achieve what you are speaking about. Let me ask how you would respond given a reversal in roles? This does not happen on other sites I use outside flying.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The site is a direct reflection of its users, the tone is set by you not us, and if you want to stop the negative attitude around here no amount of moderation or rule enforcement on our end will do it, it's up to you the user to set the tone. The colossal amount of complaining here and elsewhere grows pretty tiresome after a while, and what does it accomplish? Nothing. Is that how people behave at work?

You ask about coming together to make this place better, I've been posting about that for ages yet very few choose to lead by example.

When's the last time I received a PM by someone suggesting positive changes to the site, or asking how they can help? It's been a very long time. I have a small group of posters - generally the more experienced folks - that I PM every few months to ask their opinions on how the site is running. I never get these from other users unless I initiate. So, I'll throw it out there now, if you have a suggestion to make the site better, please send it to me via PM and I will pass it on to Joe and the other Mods for consideration, if you see something you have a problem with hit the "Report" button in the bottom right of the offending posts. If you have a question about a thread that may have been moved, is pulled for review, or has been edited, use some discretion and PM a Mod about it... posting an aggressive rant gets nobody anywhere and does little to further your agenda.

It would be nice if the general usership took some real ownership and invested in a positive manner, I think there's little else that needs to be done to make this what many of us seem to want - a useful, usable, friendly place to visit on a daily basis.

Man, Rob, go out and play, do something constructive. Mess around with the wife, mess around with someone else's. Start a thread about some obscure business jet landing at some random airport; whatever gets you goin'. Just get some distractions. There's a whole bunch of living that you really seem to be missing out on while whining on this site. You're taking this internet forum way too seriously.

I've been on this forum since its SYZ days and have seen/been involved in all kinds of stupidity. It comes, it goes. We don't have a god-given right to dictate what can and cannot be said, so relax, take everything with a grain of salt and try not to get so wrapped up in it. There are rules, just stick to the posting guidelines and stop complaining so much.

And if you need a hug, I'm here for you.

Exactly. If you don't like it here, don't read it, or post to it. No one's holding a gun to your head. Don't take this all so seriously.

Personally, the biggest change at Avcanada has been me posting less in the Misc forum.

Some of you guys wind me up. But a lot of you really impress me with your knowledge.

I no longer live in Canada. Coming to Avcanada is the closest I get to hanging out with pilots from home. It takes me to hanging out at the dock, at the flying club, in the ops center. All the things I did in my younger years and have fond memories for.

I think the mods are doing a great job. They have actually stepped up to the plate and tightened the ship and I think that's a good thing. I participate on another non aviation forum that has zero tolerence for nonsence. They close threads, but always state why in the last post.

Widow and STL...thank you for your time and effort. You're never going to please everybody, and the world is full of whiners.

so THAT'S what this "mod cave" is about?!? :)

For what it's worth, I've met widow in person and she's a nice lady! :D "Thread nazi" - perhaps harsh words... diligent? frequent link poster perhaps? She just likes to keep us updated with the latest news! She's a real human being who cares enough to stick around here in a genuine attempt to better this industry. Same goes for the rest of the mods.

When in doubt take a chill pill, and don't take life so seriously. It's Joe's site, and do you honestly think the mods here have a personal vendetta against anyone? Not likely. I agree this is one of the more temperamental forums that I follow... it just seems like lots of people have short fuses. :smt102

Have a good day :)
