Re: Clearing Customs In USA question
If you paid the ticket, it shouldn't be a problem. If you got the ticket in the US, and you haven't paid it, they can be pretty nasty to the point of detention/arrest and perhaps extradition to the originating jurisdiction of the ticket if a warrant has been issued, depending on who is checking and where and how long it's been since the ticket was issued. Also, whatever the original fine was will be multiplied several fold. If the ticket is especially stale (5 years or more) call the courthouse for the jurisdiction in which it was issued and ask them about it and how too pay it.
Won't affect your application for Red Pass though.

I Plead Guilty and Paid the fine on the spot, they let me go and I was on my way. I am in the works of getting a pardon for it but its hard to prove the need for it to the courts, and really Im not even sure if i need one. I just dont want to fly some corporate people around and stop in the USA and have the Custom guys give us a hard time or impounding the plane or something. This happened about 5 years ago, it was for drug paraphernalia it was in my car.

It's the same problem for Americns coming over to Canada. The company I work at had about 25 pilots who could not get CanPass and were laid off until they could get their records cleared. One guy was 54 years old and had a DUI when he was 18. Our company policy at the time was no CanPass = No Job.
All but 2 were eventually able to get back to work after having their convictions pardoned.
So get it done ASAP or it could come back on you 36 years later.
Another funny story was one of our crews arrived in Monteal and the Canada Customs officer asked if either pilot had ever been arrested. They both said No. The customs officer asked again. Again both said no.
He then asked the captain who was 63 years old if he remembered trying to hire a woman for the night who was a police officer when he was 26.
The captain turned red and the customs officer smiled then said they were cleard into Canada and could continue. The FO said he would keep it to himself. Needless to say he posted it on the company pilots message board.

I suppose you have to know a little history to get this joke, but did you hear the one about the Canadian pilot in Australia who - after a long flight - got frustrated with the number of questions being asked by the customs officer:
.
.
.
Aussie Customs officer: Do you have a criminal record?
Canadian Pilot: I didn't know one was still required.

Re: Clearing Customs In USA question
Any body ever have problems with the customs agents going into the USA from Canada?
Re: Clearing Customs In USA question
Nope. Mind you I'm American, so they let me in.
As aircrew coming into Canada I haven't had any major problems either.
Driving is another story.

Is there any statute of limitations on those fines, e.g.: 7 yrs.?
Re: Clearing Customs In USA question
Last month, I went through the border and the young Customs Agent decided to do an inspection on me because I was in a rental car. I'm pretty sure that's why they inspected me. They asked me quite a few questions. It was upsetting because they never asked me first if they could do it and they looked through my purse and probably my bag in the trunk. Don't think I handled it well and probably would be too nervous going again for awhile.
Re: Clearing Customs In USA question
That must have been absolutely terrifying for you, what with them violating your purse and all. And the questioning! You poor thing, you'll have to spend some more time with your therapist.Sheila wrote:Last month, I went through the border and the young Customs Agent decided to do an inspection on me because I was in a rental car. Well you had to be there. They also had taken all our documents, such as passport and agreement and held onto them. We had no sight of our passport most of the time which was at least 30 minutes. I knew this is not a good deal. The following week I saw on news an incident at the same border crossing I was at, where the border guards mishandled the passports and gave them back to the wrong people. So those people were in a real risky situation being in the US with wrong passports! Their last names were Remillard.
Doc, you may like going through that and don't have to worry about problems. Only important people appreciate that scrutiny I guess. It would be upsetting for some.

Sheila, they are just doing their job.
I have zero problem dealing with them. And no matter their mindset since I have nothing to hide.
Every time I cross, I'm mentally prepared for the full gloves search with the time and questions it will take.
Also, every time I have my passport taken out of my sight, being from a customs officer or just an airport checking agent a the counter, I verify if that's the correct one given back to me
So what's exactly the deal ?
Go try some third world countries "customs" for a change and see what they can do without asking
