I suppose the technology of these "mighty planes" is not what is being highlighted, given that the Orbis DC-10 is 41 years old, and the Martin Mars is 67 years old. Of course the "mighty ships" S.S. Normandie and even the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth II interest is more nostalgia than anything else. The series should prove interesting none-the-less..

I think when you get a chance to watch the "Mighty Planes" episode on the Mars you will surprised at just how ancient the technology is.

I am ancient. I love ancient things. The older I get, the ancient I get ;-)
Would be good if there was an episode on the C-17.

I'm real excited for this. Not enough shows about planes on tv.

imarai, don't worry it won't be all old aircraft. There will also be the A380, AN124, C5M Super Galaxy and C130 "Skibirds".

Really looking forward to this show.

I was just telling my wife I was going to delete my PVR timer for Mighty Ships, since I've seen them all, several times, and she was happy to not have it filled with those shows. Now she'll be really happy for me to have something new to set the timer for LOL

The show is pretty fun to watch I guess, lots of great footage!

But what is with the ground chief for the Mars (that thing is a BEAST) telling the flight crew what to do when the one engine failed and then acknowledging they are 45 minutes out and clearing them to land?

Kudos, very enjoyable. Its nice to see the drama turned down a notch v.s. some of the other aviation related shows. Very much enjoy seeing the mechanical issues... makes me glad I only have 1 engine to keep running .. yikes.

A few years ago I was lucky to get a tour in the Orbis DC10 with me and a few buds. Everyone involved seemed delighted to see us and give a tour. Up front it was no doubt a blast from the past and in the back seemed like I entered the twilight zone with every state of the art piece of equipment one could require in an aircraft operating room.

In fact there was an operation going on to correct a kids cross eyed condition. We peeked at the theater screen, then walked back and actually watched it through a little window!

Looking forward to more of this series.

Interesting that only one of their two Mars are flying, is it because they need to scavenge for parts? Or there's no business case for having two operational?

Speaking of mighty planes - Can't wait to see the one about the AN124.. I was lucky enough to cross one in YYR last week and get a guided tour! They took off right in front of us a few minutes later.

INSANE!!! couldn't wipe the huge smile off my face:)

6 crew members..! Cockpit looks more like a submarine than an airplane!
enjoy the pics:)

The 124 seems like a fairly "modern" aircraft. Why does it require 6 crew flight deck? I figure maybe a load master, a flight engineer/mechanic plus the 2 pilots. What else?!

I believe LTD quoted YYR, Goose Bay, not YVR. The snow would support that.
But yeah, nice pix.
And the 6-man crew I believe is 2 pilots, 2 flight engineers, a radio operator and a navigator.

Why does it take Discovery so long to put the show online?

History does it in less than 24 hours..

The Ukrainian crew were on their way to Kentuky of all places!! The plane was full of cargo and skids, not sure what but had a bunch of crap in there! They used up about half of runway 08 in YYR to lift off so im thinking they were not at max gross. We had 4 minute wake turbulence seperation.. i waited an extra minute just to be sure..:)
I'm not sure what the 6 crew members roles are but what YYZSaabGuy makes sense.
And believe me, the plane was far from modern, they had a Garmin 296 GPS (or equivalent) on the dash !!! They hid it when we walked into the cockpit as if they were ashamed! lol.. great stuff:)
