They rebook you.
If it cancelled because of weather, your generally SOL for finding accommodations.
Mechanical or crew, then most airline are on the hook for vouchers

Read what you Agreed to when you purchased the ticket.

I was in Florida this week and a United Airlines flight that was supposed to bring us to Newark from Miami before going to Buffalo was delayed because they couldn't find a crew. This would have screwed us for our flight from Newark to Buffalo. Because of where we were staying we had a few options and they were more than happy to book us on a flight from West Palm Beach to Newark at the same time we were supposed to leave Miami. All worked out.

Sounds to me like you are flying to JNB on Delta or another Skyteam member, the can zig zig you down to ATL to make the original ATL-JNB sector or else route you via AMS and then down on KLM. No biggie...happens all the time.

If you REALLY want to be proactive call your carrier and point out the issue, likely ops has already rerouted you and you will get new boarding passes at the airport.

Would have been mainline. We stopped doing that flight a few months back.

The new UAL contract has language about us not doing flights greater than 900 miles. However we have been doing a bit of ORD-YEG, and YUL-IAH. I think it has more to do with load factors than 'planning' abiding by a pilot contract.
