whats up guys i just need some help her doing my ifr rating
i need to do planning from cyow to cyyz and i kinda figured out the route but i dont know how to pick an alternate is there place to refer to or i should pick any airport and thats it ??
hellllllllllllllllllllllllllp plz
a) perhaps this is a topic worth discussing with your flight instructor....
b) pick an alternate that can handle your aircraft (i. e. not YTZ if you're in an A380), and has a TAF forecasting conditions that meet alternate minima. Preferably this alternate is relatively close to your destination, or at the very least within the range of your aircraft, allowing for you to fly to your destination, shoot an approach and a missed approach, fly to your alternate and shoot an approach and land, while still holding the appropriate reserve fuel.
- as close as possible (fuel)
- with as many ILS as possible (wx)
If you miss the (cat 1/200) ILS at pearson,
it seems unlikely to me that an non-precision
approach at a nearby reliever airport with a
500+ MDA is going to work for you. Keep
in mind localized wx phenomena (eg coastal
fog).
Most people would use CYHM as an alternate
for CYYZ. Nearby, ILS, long runways.
Common examiner trick: keep an eye on
the winds. They love to sucker you in with
an ILS with a 20k tailwind and then say,
"Gotcha! Can't use it!"
My reply: "Sure I can. The runway is 10,000
feet long. I can take a 20k tailwind in a 172
with 10,000 feet".
You really need to keep an eye on the wx. If
Pearson is below 200, ask yourself "Why?".
If there are widespread low ceilings, you are in
a world of trouble, unless you have 10 hrs of
extra fuel on board.
Is there a front passing through Pearson? Is
there significantly better weather BEFORE
Pearson? If so, that's where you could look
for an alternate - you miss at Pearson, then
fly back out of the cruddy wx into improving
wx where your alternate is.
Also remember that if you can't make your destination, you're not obliged to go to your alternate. It's just for planning purposes. Once you're in the air you can go anywhere you want, with ATC clearance, of course.
