Jazz Engineer here - 25 plus years service. We receive very little information from our 'union' as to changes that might be coming down the pipe - and therefore the rumour mill runs rampant..... The very little that is discussed here regarding the impending restructuring, is quite informative to those who come here to read. It was also mentioned that the exclusive forum is only available to the piloting group. Just a thought here, but could you people please continue posting what little you know here for the benefit of those that come here - that is, without giving away the farm. Thanks.

P.S. - What is this VSP deadline of the 31st that you mention?

VSP = Voluntary Separation Package. It is a program offered to senior pilots to entice them to retire sooner in exchange for a cash payout depending on the years of service. The company believes that the short term pain of paying out several severances is better than the long term pain of keeping the highest paid pilots on the payroll for several extra years. As well, by having pilots take the VSP, it speeds up the number of retirements which will lessen the number of reductions coming up in the next bid. In a perfect world, enough people would take the VSP so that there are no reductions and downgrades, but that won't happen.

I'm aware of what VSP means. I had heard that the pilot group had been given a verbal heads-up that VSP's were coming for the group and that your very capable organization had done some number crunching and that anyone over the age of 63 would be smart to take one. I'm just curious about this date deadline - the 31st of what?

We also have an aging engineer group and so the hope is that something of this nature will also come along our way. I have heard that the corporate leadership had identified 'demographics' as being one of the major challenges of our organization. Many have been there since the late '80s and are now looking for the door. I personally would be interested in getting one these. Many of the younger engineers are starting to look for chances of advancement or reasons to stick around and gain experience on the Q400. It would be nice to see some sort of movement/direction coming from our corporate leadership right now. Maybe this will be the week....

That means that this is all happening fairly quick. So they put out the verbal, to be quickly followed by the final text on paper and the pilots have around 9 days to put their names in. Most of the Jazz pilots of my generation are keen to move onward with their lives but how many are in the position to actually take the money and run remains to be seen.

Hello guys,

Out of curiosity so as to help the company mitigate layoff would they accept a leave of absence from an employee still under the 1 year probation or is it out of question ?

Thank you for your answer.

Jazz has an average pilot attrition rate of 60-100 pilots per year. There will not be any involuntary layoffs.

jazz and ac have done fairly well with avoiding layoffs through loa’s etc in the past. My sources say there will be some pain with this though with downgrades and moves from the east.

Here's hoping that some of those LOA's or SLOA's find their way toward the maintenance end of things as well.

I've heard that some FOs have been denied LOA requests!

Based on communications from Management, the upcoming bid without any mitigation would result in overall Captaincy reductions throughout the system resulting in downgrades. The mitigation strategies, be it VSP, SLOA etc are directed at those Senior Captain's and I presume FO's (who could theoretically hold a Captaincy). If FO's are being denied an LOA it is because their departure is of no benefit in the grand plan. If the numbers showed an overall reduction, all mitigation initiatives exhausted resulting in layoffs, then yes, you would see leaves approved regardless of seniority.

I don't think that number includes the VSP, could be over 30 new hires.

That number includes the 17 guaranteed vsp's. i think there will be around 30-40 vsp's granted all said and done. Stinky is probably right. 30+ new hires is my guess

How much positions have been slashed in total? I know the bid shows hiring but that's thanks to the VSPs and the recycling FO seniority list

I had an old copy of the seniority list from about 2 years ago and there are about 100 less total pilots at Jazz than there are now. Used to be a little over 1500 now a bit over 1400.

Not including early retirements there are 10 vacancies. 27 if you include early retirements and like stated above probably more once the dust settles.
