Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
Why are they not Orange or Yellow on top? Anyone?... Bueller?... Anyone?
Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
Don't those rafts have an ELT? Nobody has picked up an ELT yet...

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
If any ELTs were activated the batteries are dead now. If they were the old 121.5 MHz analogue units the satellites stopped monitoring them in 2009.
Grey life rafts? That's crazy!

Come to think of it, would it ever have mattered before what colour aircraft escape ramps are ... except maybe for this time ?

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
Ramp? No.
But if it's going to be used as a raft. I'd like one that is as noticeable as possible. It's still going to be tough to find.
I'm thinking of getting a strobe and mirror if I fly commercially again. Maybe a spot and a hand held radio.
I guess I can't count on the Airline or Plane manufacturers to provide high vis life rafts anymore.

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
The slides come with a canopy. The ones I have seen were yellow in colour.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find in this business
Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
Doubling the ramp's purpose as a raft ' in the event of ' was a great idea, ... but in that process must have overlooked the small detail of also changing to flourescent ? When they are tucked away in their respective storage compartments who's to notice such an obvious oversight. My point was too that since that hasn't ever been an issue yet as it might be now ...
The other thing is, how easy is it for this "ramp/raft" to disconnect from the aircraft itself; we get an O2 instruction and the life preserver lesson upon each boarding, yet what about the ramp disconnect ... or is that automatic ?

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
SIGH....
First of all - if anyone bothered to read the safety cards - it tells you how to disconnect the slide/raft.
Second - it doesn't really matter what color they are -
1) No-one is going to be drifting for 2 weeks in the ocean
2) as stated the rafts are equiped with high vis canopies, stobe units, elt's and 50 or more people is high vis yellow life jackets also equiped with strobes.
3) aircraft that have not been hijacked, stolen and/or hidden are on strict flightplans and in contact with ATC. Anything that goes wrong and you will be found preety darn quick.
4) In reality - rafts are more of a comfort thing. The odds of survivng (plane or people) a ditching and getting the rafts out is very remote.
Not really something to be worrying about.

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
True - but SAR and all commercial aircraft still listen to that frequency. If they were the old 121.5 MHz analogue units the satellites stopped monitoring them in 2009.
Slide ELTs have been upgraded most likely. (they have in N.A.)

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
On the Hudson (a nearly perfect landing scenario) some passengers went into the water, ... don't know if any ramp/rafts were disconnected there or not.
Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
If they can land on the Hudson, they can land on the ocean down here. Around the equator the ocean is often smooth. The areas I have been checking on Tomnod.com are another story. Scary nasty water. I'm not sure where it is but somewhere in the Indian Ocean. The search area is really huge. I also know from diving that survival time even in warm water is limited as the body loses heat 25 times faster in water. If the passengers got out and activated ELTs they should have already been found...

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
WTF??? Now I'm hearing the Captain and his wife, still lived under the same roof - but had separated??, and just before he boarded the aircraft he received a 2 minute phone call from an unknown woman - from a phone that had been registered using false name and info??? Don't know if it's true or not, just heard in on CTV news, then googled it?
Then the article said they didn't interview the wife for 2 weeks - 'out of respect'???, and under pressure from the FBI they are now interviewing her???

I found it interesting that both photos had the same legs, trying to find the picture of the two fake passports.

Damn you "The Onion" & now Daily Currant too. Should have done my homework before I posted.sstaurus wrote:Apologies if this was posted already, but Sarah Palin has a theory...

Back to the thread... Malaysian PM just on the news says all data confirms the flight ended in the S. Indian Ocean...and now the searchers just said they have actually seen two piece of debris (first confirmed sighting of debris) 2500 km SW of Perth. The one searcher said it is orange and rectangular and the 2nd was grey/white. Ships enroute now to the scene...and we should have some confirmation once daylight breaks in that part of the world.
Damn Onion.

You can't possibly be serious.......everyone lets let this one die right here. No more comments on this.flyinthebug wrote:Just a sidebar here. The sad part is shes dead serious! Just think how close this woman came to being the VP of the USA and a heartbeat away from the White House!?!? The Daily Currant is a satirical website not unlike The Onion.
It gets a lot of people.

From BBC's live streaming event page:
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says "with great sadness" data now confirms that the aircraft's last position was in the Indian Ocean south of Perth.

An emergency press conference is underway now and there are rumours that the families are being booked on a charter flight to Australia.

Malaysian PM says missing flight plunged into southern Indian Ocean
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says a new analysis of satellite data indicates the missing Malaysia Airlines plane plunged into a remote corner of the Indian Ocean.
The news is a major breakthrough in the unprecedented two-week struggle to find out what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard on March 8.
Dressed in a black suit, Najib announced the news "with deep sadness and regret" in a brief news conference late Monday night.
He said Malaysia Airlines has informed the families of passengers of the plane's fate.
Najib said the information was based on an unprecedented analysis of satellite data from Inmarsat.

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 - Missing
By chance does anyone know the recording time of a 777 CVR? I know the aircraft I work on, which have a very modern CVR, only record 120 min and then start over. Everything prior to that gets overwritten.
If the aircraft is where they figure it is......that information could have been lost hours before it went down.
