Quick question:

What is 1st year (starting) annual gross pay for a 737 FO at Westjet?

That's the bare basic. If you do espp, if we get profit share, and select rsu, you looking at a gross about 15-20k K more. If you pick up extra flying will also greatly help.
I found as a top scale fo, I made 35k over my basic compensation, and I'm not an OT junky.

I earned $72k my first year at WJ, $84k second year and $103k my third year. That was without much OT.

I did a few OT pairings and picked up some straight time, got about the same numbers. Year 1 about 70K with ESP and year two 80K. (Not including Per diem). Year 3 will be even better with the pay jump. Options or RSU's on top plus profit share is the icing on the cake. If you want at least some control of your pension and compensation this company is for you.

"Control of your pension" - is that what you guys are calling the esop?

I like giving up control on the pension front - I like it that I won't be able to stop the cheques from pouring in... LOL.

I gave up "control of my pension" when I joined Air Canada. My pension is almost $140,000/year, thanks to the pension gurus at Air Canada. I doubt I could have done better otherwise.

 You can always give it to someone more capable of managing a portfolio than Air Canada. No dipping there, ever..

Sure you can. But you will not be guaranteed anything. You could lose it all. If you can do better than $140,000/year for the rest of your life (in my case hopefully another 30 years), well done.

Anyway it's a moo point, Air Canada no longer offers defined benefit pension plans. New hires contribute to defined contribution pension plans which gives them more control.

Definition of moo point: It's like a cow's opinion, it doesn't really matter

Now that was funny.

There is no doubt that the best money and pension in Canada is for the AC guys who made the cut off prior to the defined contribution guys.

The WestJet guys do very well if they work a bit harder and the nice thing is most wont have to work until 65. That is the benefit of managing money smartly on the front end. Most guys that started young enough have eyes on retiring in their 50s which isn't bad at all.

Question - do the AC types around here have any data on average longevity of AC pilots that retire at 65? Does anybody retire at AC prior to 65 for that matter?

Thanks in advance.

Before Dec/12 everybody at AC retired at 60 or younger. So no pilot has had a chance to reach 65 yet at AC.

No doubt the long haul life at 65 is tougher than it is at 55. You can only lose so many sleeps, and miss so many shits before it catches up with you.

Unlike in the US, Canadian companies aren't allowed to "dip" into pension funds. At any DB pension the money is protected, I think the only part at risk in a worst case type thing would be the SRP or "top hat" that you collect on top of your base pension. And for that to be at risk the company would have to disappear all together...

They can if there is a modest surplus.

You have to admit, its nice to have the ability to say pay off your mortgage in under a decade, or invest it (your money) how you see fit. Its the flexibility of this plan that is both its strength and weakness. A DB pension is awesome but sadly is also a thing of the past for most.

Nobody has made it to age 65 retirement yet as the extension was implemented December 2012 so the first 65 year old retirees won't be until December 2017. We had 5 retire last month. All of 2014 had 4 or 5 retire. This was supposed to be the peak of retirements (130-150/year for 3 or 4 years). Hence the super-awesome-stagnation we are in.
