Looking at the Calgary departure list for tomorrow, the amount of cancellations is quite limited. Are they delaying the inevitable or is something afoot?

The statement said additional aircraft are being parked and there will only be 30 airplanes operating across its entire network by the end of Sunday

What? No. Nobody would possibly want to treat their employees properly and pay them well. There's gotta be some rule somewhere that we can force the peasant class back to work and keep exploiting them for pennies. (Sarcastic joke referring to all front line employees that the ruling class think they control).

Pride is replacing Canada Day. I'm sure there are more details, but the Montreal pride parade is happening and Canada Day parade isn't.

Now this is a take I can get behind. No name calling but pointing out issues with politicians and their leadership. Good stuff.

THE STRIKE IS OVER!

We have NEGOTIATED - not arbitration- a 5 year deal
This means TA2 will be voted on. Don't know details but it sounds like what we wanted we are getting.

From the union:

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – June 30, 2024 – We are grateful and relieved to announce that the AMFA-represented Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and WestJet have successfully negotiated a contract covering the next five years. This will end our lawful strike action against the company, effective immediately.

As a direct result of our members’ solidarity, AMFA was able to reach a second tentative agreement (TA2) providing substantial improvements over both the current terms of employment and the terms provided for in the first tentative agreement.

TA2 provides for immediate pay increases, full restoration of the WestJet Savings Plan (WSP), and improved benefits for the employees.

WestJet’s final concessions were obtained due to three principal factors:

The CIRB’s decision to uphold our right to strike
The exemplary discipline our members demonstrated in implementing that strike
The Union’s commitment to direct all employees back to work immediately now that TA2 has been signed
We have requested that all AMEs return to work immediately so that we can provide the value of their labour that was the primary element in achieving this deal.

AMFA-WJ members in good standing will soon vote to ratify the TA to solidify it as the group’s first collective bargaining agreement. Ratification will render the compulsory arbitration ordered by the Labour Minister unnecessary.

The Union Negotiating Committee is grateful for everyone’s indispensable contribution and support of labour groups across Canada.

We believe this outcome would not have been possible without the strike, but we do regret the disruption and inconvenience it has caused the traveling public over the Canada Day holiday period. The timing was coincidental as the negotiation process did not follow a predictable timeline. We are pleased the strike lasted only 48 hours and that service can now return to normal. We appreciate the support the public has given us as our organization stood up to management on behalf of hardworking Canadians. We appreciate everyone’s patience in the face of cancelled flights and changing plans.

Now it’s time to show the world how we make WestJet fly. Thank you from all of us at AMFA and the WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers we represent.

CEOs and executives come and go - I'm pretty sure that these ones will be going soon.

The AMEs only want good faith bargaining from management and to achieve their own goals, and whether it's today or tomorrow or next week, the pressure is on. Let them know that you're ready to save them with a deal right now - it's on them.

What kind of four dimensional chess are you playing to come to that conclusion?

1) Labour action is barely on the radar of political supporters. Otherwise they would be running as fast as they can away from the Conservatives who DO have a history of strike-breaking.

2) The NDP—in case you didn’t know—is heavily pro-labour and it’s doubtful that they would keep the coalition going over such an overt violation of labour rights.

3) If we want to look at labour in this country and the complete lack of significant strikes, sympathy strikes, wildcat strikes, and general strikes in spite of some of the most severe affordability crises in our nations history—Id say that JT is already “winning”.

As you can see, it worked. Watch and learn, Bob.

That's disappointing. There isn't a Canada Day in Quebec anyway though...

If anything Westjet’s actions to spend multiple days down to only a few flights proves to me they would have let an Encore strike go for a long time considering they only have a few tails flying anyway.
