Crash on Lake Simcoe
Not much detail yet, I heard it as a fire department call this aft. I've heard "ultralight".

Our team is still out on the ice, so there'll be more report when they're back on shore, and the Chief meets with the media...

DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
I've been told who it was, a pilot local to the area, though his identity doesn't seem to have been publicly released yet. A fairly experienced pilot, who I have met a few times. The plane is completely burned, though it appears to have contacted the ice in a level attitude, as the pattern of the plane on the ice appears whole, and everything in the correct relative position.

What type was the aircraft?

Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
Media says:What type was the aircraft?
Which I also understand to be the type from another source...In a press release, the TSB said it was a Fisher Super Koala Ultralight that collided with the ice surface

Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
Some pictures of what this aircraft type is.
The initial picture in my mind when I read ultralight was the typical barebones American regulations type ultralight when in fact(as I should have known), the Canadian category can be much more 'robust' aircraft.......

Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
News update from the crash retrieval, being reported as hitting the ice in a steep nose-down attitude. I can't help but wonder how an ultralight with a stall speed of <40mph and an open area of ice to land on ends up in this position.
Would it ever be nice to have a year in GA with no fatalities!
Condolences to the friends and family affected by this horrible accident, I am sure their lives changed forever.

Pilot publicly identified:

I did not know him really well, just to chat, I'd landed into his home runway a few times. He had made a beautiful aviation home for himself. I'm sad for him...

Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
Anyone thinking of a medical incident/incapacitation event causing this?
Re: Crash on Lake Simcoe
Yes. Clearly that's something to think about. But not knowing the pilot or the airplane in question it's speculative in the extreme.
