C1 Pass Petition Making the Rounds
FYI for those AC employees who would like to see the C1 pass abolished, you can sign the online petition below. The issue, as some see it, revolves around the buying of seniority.

The c1 is available to senior people at the same price as the junior people. It's a fair system for all. Get over it. Stop your Whyning. This pass was developed to give us J class. The seniority is not the focus. I have witnessed buddies of the agents get the better deal. This is wrong. The c1 solves the problem. Period.

I agree with Q400 and toni...
C1 has nothing to do with Seniority... skipping seniority by buying C1 has been taking care off, by no being able to book with less than 24h notice.
what the Fu.. with people trying to shoot themself in the foot ?and then they bitch and complain,
C1 allow you to have a nice flight while going oversea!!
hey what about we sign a petition about not having passes at all?
give your head a shake.

I think the C1 pass needs to be somehow changed because it has some problems.
1) C1 does not guarantee you will get a seat in business class. Many times I have used a C1 pass and had to sit in the back. I usually bought the C1 in order to have business class on a long flight. Even with lots of seats available in the front and back, last minute upgrades or bookings can fill up the front.
2) If there are many cons trying to get on a flight, and they all pay for the C1 to get the increased boarding priority, then we are back where we started. Only now the company gets more money for basically doing nothing. Especially if most or all of those C1's end up sitting in the back.
Canadian Airlines used to have a system where you could pay extra for a business class upgrade. It had nothing to do with boarding priority and you didn't get billed for it if the front was full and you ended up in economy.

I agree that on heavy routes, everyone will buy them leading to everyone paying more money to travel to the same place.
However, I have a bigger problem with the notion of a new hire employee buying his/her way onto a flight ahead of a reitred employee with 35 years of service you is living on a fixed income.

Fixed incomes for most retirees far exceeds what a new hire employee earns, the retiree should be mortgage free and kids out of the house so again I fail to see the problem.
Retired, 60-110k pension, no mortgage, no income loss if getting home late; verus 37k, kids, mortgage, income or career loss if not home on time. Its a no brainer who needs the help.
This is a great system. I use it once a year on our "big" vacation to treat ourselves versus going full fare. You only get 4x per year and most don't use it that many times. This petition is a joke made by those that can't stand sharing the toys in the box with anyone but the gray haired set.
If one has thirty years here, it would be nice to have thirty good ones instead of ten bad, ten so-so, and ten great.
Now someone please swear at me repeatedly to tell me why I'm wrong.
You learn more from your mistakes than your successes. F**k enough things up and you'll die a genius.

You say you use it once a year to treat yourself. Treat yourself to what? I presume you mean getting a business class seat.
How would you feel if you paid for the C1 but still ended up in the back?
I have used the C1 pass about 8 times and I have mixed feelings about them. I like the idea of paying for a business class upgrade and getting increased boarding priority. But I sure don't like sitting in the back after having paid for a C1 pass. It happens more often than you think.
You may say "Well so what, at least you got a better boarding priority". Every time I have used the C1's, boarding priority was not a factor.
Once, nobody got on because the flight was full of revenue passengers.
Every other time I used it, the flight left with open seats in the back. Three of those times I was stuck in the back with some open seats around me.
In the end, I would not like to lose the C1's, but there has to be a better way to make it more workable.

Lost.
I think some common sense would tell you that if the loads show full in "J" you won't spend the extra cash. There is risk involved, no doubt but you can reduce it with a little homework. And if you really have to go, the C1 does give you better priority. The company has created this monster as it's the only way to get J class outside of some sales agent doing you a favour (the seniors work this really well). That's the problem I have with the old system. The agent decided in many cases who got what. Now, if space is available, C1 gets it before C2. There is less chance of screwing with the system but I'm sure some stuff still goes on. I'm in favour of the C1 fare even though it costs considerably more but that cost is the same for everyone. Fair enough?

The 3 times I got stuck in the back, the Employee Travel website showed seats available in "J". The problem is that those J seats can fill up at the last minute with revenue passengers and Elite upgrades.
I would be happy to see a change where you would not be charged if you didn't get the J seat, and/or you din't need the increased priority. (because the A/C left with open seats).
But, I would be very unhappy if the company just scraps the whole thing because of this petition.

C1 passes are a good thing. Just because some employees are frustrated commuters/travellers is no reason to abolish them. It is a great privelege to be able to live where you want and still work a considerable distance away. Plan accordingly. However, it isn't necessarily a god-given right to enjoy that privelege. C1 is not perfect, but it can be very handy. And, contrary to some people's opinion, it is fair. It may be extra $ but it's still far cheaper than buying a regular ticket.
The priveleges we enjoy at work are the result of hard work by those who came before us, whether via union struggle or otherwise, and great diligence should be excercised before petitions like these make the rounds, lest we should lose more than we bargained for.
Have a good one...
