Working at Porter
Hi there,
Just wondering what it’s like working at Porter on the E2?
- QOL for a commuter/working in base?
- upgrade times currently
- details on the contract? Routes, OT, mmg, etc?
- flight benefits for you and your family (heard confirmed is 50 percent off)
- pension? RRSP program? Etc?
- hotels, destinations, etc
- long term growth plans (looks like 38 more jets on order)
- training (heard you need to pay for you own accommodations)
- base rumours (heard rumblings in yeg)
How does it compare to WJ and AC?
Cheers!

-Upgrade times are going to be a while I would think. Two to three years probably. If not longer. Not long compared to some other carriers maybe but also not short.
-There is no contract. We are not unionized....yet. Routes are good. Lots of variety. MMG is 75. Overtime is plentiful.
-Flight benefits are good. Lots of interline agreements. Confirmed is 50% off but then taxes still apply so it's more like 40% off.
-Retirement savings is poor. Major improvements are needed there.
-Hotels are fine for the most part. Some are not great.
-Long term plans look promising. But it's essentially a start-up so there is always risk.
-Training is good. You will be given all the help and guidance you need. Yes, you will have to pay for your own accommodations if you're based in YYZ. It sucks.
-There are rumblings of a western base but nothing solid. If it does happen it'll be a couple years I would imagine.
I can't compare it to WJ or AC as I've never worked there but I can tell you that I am very happy here. But even still there is a lot of room for improvement. Some of the pairings are bad. Long days followed by min rest followed by another long day.
If I was a young FO I'm not sure Porter is where I'd hang my hat. Might be good for a couple years but the company is not making it a career destination. I sincerely hope that changes but who knows.

I'm very interested in hearing more about this. Are OAL through myID? Do you have option to fly standby business?Speedbrakes wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 1:11 pm-Flight benefits are good. Porter is teeing up the golf ball with one world alliance.
Alaskan. British airways just announced today. Rumblings about American and Qatar.
Yes it’s through myidtravel.
50% confirmed for everyone on your list. On porter aircraft only
No half blocks, and no airline in expansion mode will ever give you half blocks.
Porter doesn’t officially offer a business class product so I believe that business class standby isn’t something we can book on myidtravel with other airlines since they don’t have a reciprocal product with us. Even though PorterReserve is a premium product, it’s still classified as an economy class so the lie flat seats at Qatar are still out of reach.
However there is a very extensive list of travel agreements with dozens of airlines and the folks in that department are continuously working and successfully adding airlines.

Commuter here from another country (yes, there are a few of us at Porter)Canadianpilot2024 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 12:39 pm Hi there,

QoL - Awesome, as a line holder, I get my days off, I'm able to get later starts and earlier finishes, but I'm also not picky on where I go, it's all about timing for me.
When it comes to your other questions, stuff is actively changing with our new FOAG 16.
Flight benefits are great! Over a 120 airlines the last time I checked. New ones showing up every month since I joined. 50% confirmed on our own metal and we get eight 50% off codes a year to give away to friends and family!

Re: Working at Porter
This might be an alternate solution for some:
We are looking for qualified pilots for an assignment overseas. It is for a commuting position as a First Officer with Nippon Cargo Airlines (Japan). The commuting airports are LAX & ORD. The remuneration package is in USD which for the Canadian Dollar, has been big plus.
Details are posted here:
https://acempl.com/job-opportunities.php
I took a LOA many years ago during the Canadian / Air Canada merger and it was probably the best career choice I made. Like every ariline, there are the good and the bad points, but for the most part, it has been a positive experience.
We do have a handful of Canadians working here, all from various airlines from Canada and overseas.
ACE employment.
There is also a post available in the Aviation Job ads (free) section of the main forum index:
