Just wondering if anyone knows where to get British Standard tools, which sizes I will need to work on HS748's and how much they cost.
Thanks

British Standard tooling is expensive on this side of the pond, and very difficult to find. I have a Snap-On 5-pce 1/4" drive Brit. std socket set that cost me near $300, but last I heard as of a few years ago Snap On no longer makes British sockets. They do still have the wrenches listed in thier catalogue though:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp ... ir=catalog
Keep in mind, while it looks like they are regular fractional wrenches (1/4, 3/8..etc.) they are not, the brits measure shank diameter rather than head size and the heads are oddball sizes somewhere between metric and US standard. For wrenches, if you don't want to pay the Snap-On guy that kinda dough, I would suggest picking up a cheap set from Sears/Canadian Tire/Princess Auto and grinding them open to fit British hardware, you will save a pile of $$. Having a good set of 1/4 drive 6-point metric and US sockets in your box also comes in handy in a pinch where there aren't any Brit sockets around. I no longer use my Brit sockets, and may part with them for the right price
. As far as sizes, the list on the wrenches I posted on Snap-on site pretty much covers the majority of the 748, and keep a 6" adjustable wrench (aka. British converter) in your toolbox as well.

i got the full socket/wrench set off the snapon truck back in 2002. not cheap, but totally necessary for the HS748's! having ppl borrow tools gets old quick
if you can, try to find someone who'll sell you a used set...check out ebay too. lots of ppl buy these, use them for a bit while doing an apprenticeship up north somewhere, then never touch them again...

Check out westward's socket set. I have there "universal" deep socket set in 3/8's drive. Covers SAE, Metric, British Standard, and some others I've never heard of.
Bought it years ago when I was working on f27's and between it and the strap-on/knipex all sixteenths, i was covered. The sockets also dont round off bolts/nuts cause they grip the "flats" of the nut instead of near the crests.
Also, you're not stuck with useless tools when you stop(you will!!)working on that stuff.
You can also check out British car part suppliers, as a lot also sell wrench sets, etc. For sure they would be cheaper than the second mortgage route that is snap on.
Sockets were less than 80 bucks.

Thanks for the tips I talked to Snap-on guy today you're right they don't make the sockets anymore, the wrench price isn't that far away from their standard wrenches.
Kiss My TCAS what kinda price are we talkin about I'm starting a new job here shortly looking to get the right tools

BS Tools
748 engineers retiring? I wasn't sure that was allowed! Don't they just ship them off to the boonies where folks don't mind listening to them? Yes, like the airplane itself.
Anybody that has Brit tools that are gathering dust can p.m. me. There's always somebody looking to start, or complete, a set at the place where I've got my box parked.

Don't be concerned with what other people think, most of them don't do it very often anyway.

I've bought from this guy before.
He is reasonable with shipping. Has a lot of German and Taiwanese made BS, BA and Whitworth.
The quality is good and a lot cheaper than Snap-on.

BSF Tools
Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I've relieved one of the fine visitors to this thread of his "unnecessary" British Standard tools
(Thanks, Roscoe!:D) and I'm looking for more. Particularly the 1/4" drive BSF sockets to fit the smaller sizes.
If you, or someone you know, have BSF tools gathering dust, it's time to dig them out, scrape off the dino turds, and PM me with the list and a suggested price. BSW tools as well, but at lower prices (they confuse the Newbies
)
If I don't reply immediately, don't be concerned. I may actually be at work, where they frown on wheeling and dealing on Company time.
