Flight schools in Northwestern Ontario

Can you guys tell me some of the schools here in NW Ontario? The one that was here in Thunder Bay has apparantly closed up shop, and now there is no where I can go to see if piloting peaks my interest.

I would prefer in and around Kenora, seeing as I have family there aswell.

Maybe they have some float places around there who knows...

Thanks,

-Dave

Confederation College in Thunder Bay for a full commercial program with float rating. That's about all I'm aware of until you get as far east as the Sioux which has commercial MIFR.

could you afford to buy an ole 150 or something? and get a freelance instructor? Friends of mine did this and it worked out very well for them, and in the end, they had an airplane. It cost them way less than going to school.(helped a family friend was an ame)

There is a place in Kenora called Heritage Aviation and I think Lockhart in Sioux Lookout does flight training. Dryden Flying Club will rent you a PA-12 on floats for build up time. Hope this helps.

If your set on Northwestern Ontario then there aren't that many options this time of year. In South Eastern Manitoba there is Harv's Air that can take you all the way from PPL to Multi IFR. If your full-time it will take about a year and a little bit with hard work to complete your training

There's definnaly a guy in Kenora with a 172 that does training and the odd charter on his 172. Call the airport and they should be able to tell you who he is.

Just make sure you're getting quality training. It may be tempting to stick in Kenora but if the guy's a hack (not saying he is, I'm unaware of him), it'll be detrimental to you in the long run. Quality training should be your number 1 priority, not so much location, just ask Cat Driver.

There is a little brown building on the right hand side as you drive in. And just in front of the new Navcanada bldg. in Kenora that says they do some flight training. I don't know the person...but apparently someone is available.

After reading the last comment. I think this thought should also be considered. No matter who you get for your initial pilots licence training. As long as you both communicate well. The basic training syllabus for flight schools is mandated by TC rules. Most flight instructors are going to be fairly competent to provide the sense of security and awareness required to maintain student confidence. But initial training is just the beginning. Ask any pilot that has been flying for years. And they will likely tell you that they learned more about flying in the subsequent 100, 200, 300, etc hours of PIC. Then they knew when they just got there licence.

At some point in the flight training. The influence of an exceptional flight instructor surely is a benefit. But not likely during the early stages of ab-initio.

Another option I have is to stay with my sister this summer in Toronto.

From there I have the option of several flight schools, but I was thinking of Canadian Flyers Inc. at the City Centre Airport.

Anyone have experience with Canadian Flyers?

Toronto is a great place to go to school. Some of the bars give out free drink all night long ,and you can get as much sex as you want all night long .At least that is what my sister told me.

Northwestern Ontario - What exactly is Northwestern Ontario anyway? Being from Manitoba, I would consider it anything west of T-Bay. However I know some people from Toronto who consider it anything north of Barrie and west of the 400. Only in Toronto, I guess.

If you are willing to go as far west as Kenora, then you should look at Harv's. They are in Steinbach, only about 1 1/2 hr west of Kenora.

Toronto is probably the most expensive place for flight training around here. And not only is everything more expensive, you've almost certainly got a long flight to the practice area and back.

In the winter, I'd suggest Florida for flight training, esp with the new complete licence reciprocity between the DOT and the FAA. In the late spring and early fall, I'd look at Harv Air in MB. And in the furnace heat of the summer, find someplace near a large body of water to moderate the temp, but beware of the fog!

I see you posted another topic for flight training in Florida, Hedley.

I guess I did not mention that I was really intending to do some lessons this summer when I'm off school.
