Print Article E-mail Article LAC DU BONNET -- Two men barely got wet when the float plane they were flying in touched down on the Winnipeg River, flipped over and then partly submerged in the water.

The two men, both pilots according to witnesses, scrambled from the plane, climbed onto one of the floats and waited about 15 minutes until a boater raced to the overturned single-engine Turbo Otter and picked them up.

"I barely got my feet wet," said the pilot, who didn't want to give his name.

The plane is owned by Adventure Air and was landing near docks on the Winnipeg River just northeast of Lac du Bonnet.

The pilot said he was landing the plane when a wind gust "lifted the wing and flipped us. Everything happened very slowly. It rolled onto its side and we climbed out."

The two men were returning from a northern fishing camp.

Floating upside down, the plane drifted to the shoreline, and emergency crews and staff with Adventure Air tied ropes to it from the shore to secure it.
