Can we fly on the side????
As the topic asks, are we able to do any flying on the side, or are we restricted to only company ops??
Just curious as i have a lot of time off as the rp.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Can we fly on the side????
My understanding is that you need special MLO approval and you may not under any circumstances exceed 90 hours between your AC flying and your "flying on the side".

No, I'm not an MLO, I'm only pointing out the reference. If you have further questions I strongly suggest you contact the MLO for clarification. You will help your credibility if you already know what the FOM says on the matter though, and will look like an idiot if you don't. It is your main reference for your job afterall, and you should know how to look that kind of stuff up. The search function is very useful for that.

Easy Rockie. He never asked if you were a MLO and I hope you weren't implying that he is an "idiot" for not knowing the FOM reference section, or being able to translate lawyerese into laymans terms. My guess is that this is someone on flat pay that needs to find avenues to meet ends meet and was using AvCanada as an avenue to explore other options. A little sensitivity for your brethren.Rockie wrote:No, I'm not an MLO, I'm only pointing out the reference. If you have further questions I strongly suggest you contact the MLO for clarification. Re: Can we fly on the side????
yycflyguy, thankyou, someone sees my question.
I realize an MLO will not be on this site answering questions.
I know where and what the reference states, simply yes or no is the better answer, or does anyone do it??
With doom and gloom on the plate of every second flight deck a little foresight isn't a bad thing.
thanks again for the reposnses, good luck to all in the upcoming months, flatpay, no pay and all.
Safe flying.
Tony
no worries yycflyguy, i have been called worse than idiot, really hurts when it's from family!!!!

Re: Can we fly on the side????
Yes you can, talk to your MLO and they can arrange it providing you are not working for competition. You have to get an approval letter and that comes from Doug Bastow, you can email him directly to. Approval letter is good for one year, you just have to make sure you don't break any CARS regs. Not sure about the 90 hour thing, it has never been mentioned to me. I have been flying on the side for almost 2 years, need something to help out the flat Salary and allow me to live.
The Rules change in summer of 06, so lots of guys still think that you are not allowed to.
Just be cautious about the companies insurance, in case anything was to happen.
If you have any other questions PM me. Hope this helps

Re: Can we fly on the side????
That is my understanding too.
The 90 hour thing comes from trying to respect the contract. If ACPA negotiated a contract that says under no circumstances can one of their pilots fly beyond 90 hours in a month how can someone flying a full block plus 40 hours "under the table" not be fatigued. Yes, I know the contract is ONLY between ACPA and Air Canada but the insurance implications could leave you high and dry if you have an incident/accident and are shown to be fatigued or busting CARS.
Call the ACPA hotline if you have questions too.
Flat pay sucks and I think guys forget quickly what it is like to watch the money go out faster than it comes in. Hang in there and do what you gotta do to get by, but don't do something that jeoparizes your primary job.

You're right. The written word is not very good at conveying tone and often it can be misinterpreted or completely misunderstood. That's why lawyers make such a good living making simple things hopelessly complicated. I apologize Tony for misunderstanding your words and intent. Likewise my words were meant as advice rather than criticism, but after re-reading them I can see how easy it would be to take them as criticism. They weren't.yycflyguy wrote:Easy Rockie. My only other advice on this is to speak to the MLO and clarify what the FOM says. Get whatever authorization you need in writing and strictly adhere to the conditions.
