Flights for Volunteers
My name's Rachel and I'm a student at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. I am part of a non-profit, student-run volunteer organization called Queen's Project on International Development. For the last nine years, we have been sending volunteers to communities in Nunavut to run free literacy appreciation summer camps for youth aged 6-15. Our project is continuing again this year and we hope to send volunteers to Baker Lake, Repulse Bay and Arviat this sunmer. Unfortunately, flights to Nunavut cost about 25% of our organization's income and we were hoping that it might be possible to get discounted or free flights to the three communities. If anybody has any advice on how to best approach this, it would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!

Re: Flights for Volunteers
Has your organization tried approaching the airlines that serve these communities yet? I mean in a way not only concentrating on what the airline can do for your organization, but also the good publicity the airline gets from supporting an effort such as yours. Many airlines like to be associated with non-profit movements that give something back to the community, especially when it is seen as a big benefit (publicity) at minimal cost to a corporation. For example, providing otherwise empty revenue seats on a flight at a marginal cost to your organization.

Yeah, exactly... I can see First Air flying you for free for sure. I guess they could only take you so far because I don't think they go to those communities. But chances are the operator that does would take you the rest of the way.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Twenty years from now you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do.

Try First Air, Calmair or Keewatin. These are your best options but I might have few other ideas. PM me if you need more help.
Good luck with your request.

Hello Rachel,
Your project sounds very interesting, to say the least. That is Calm Air country you are heading up to, best bet is to contact their head office directly.
Calm Air

If anyone can help you get into that part of the north it would be CalmAir. First Air and Canadian North only go into Rankin, if things don't work out with Calm Air, try them next.
Best of luck with your project.

PS. Contact Ministry of Education, Gov't of Nunavut, they may have some funds available to help out with transportation costs.
