Weather Eastern Canada

Post by FE_PLT »

Hi folks, is it just me or it's been at least 2-3 weeks now that in the eastern part of the country the weather has been shuffling between MVFR to IFR only. We are constantly affected by Quasi-Stationary low pressure systems that are just sitting there and dumping their crap on us. You even look at the GFA's from coast to coast for instance and today it's pretty much the same scenario, nothing is moving east!!! Better, you look at the FD's and there's no wind in the upper atmosphere, 7 knots at 53000 ft, what the heck? Have we lost our prevailling westerlies? I've only been flying for 3 years so I don't have much experience but it seems like it's the first time I'm witnessing such a thing...yet the forecast is still not looking good for another week!

Maybe the Gulfstream has stopped. Save us Dennis Quaid.
Here in northern Ontario we had a big low sitting over Hudson Bay for quite a while greatly delaying our summer.

if you were in the maritimes last summer, you would be saying 'boy look at all the sun(ny breaks) we're getting this year!'

I actually moved out of the Maritimes in May 08. Before that I remember having sunny summers unlike what we're having now...

It's been wierd in Sudbury lately. I've seen a few hot shot float drivers bombing over the city at 700 AGL with CBs around and clouds on the bottom going one way and clouds on the top going another. I think of these guys and think "man, they must REALLY have to get to the camp." (that's Northern Ontarian for "cottage")

You wouldn't catch me doing that.

Someone's gonna feel some pain from this quasi-stationary low.

Fly safe people! (funny post, clunkdriver  )

What is wrong with the weather in Ontario

Post by jetmech »

As the question goes: What is wrong with this BS Summer....yet again but worse this time in Ontario than 2008? It's so depressing. To come off of two brutal winters in a row, with no Summer to speak of. I'm sure the Winter of 09 won't dissapoint.

I know. Forecasting rain here for the next week straight. At least let us recharge our batteries before another round of winter :) . A grass hut on a beach sounds pretty good right now.

You would think that our sheer awesomeness would keep the crappy stuff over Manitoba and Quebec.

Well, If you had stayed until mid-july 08 and into August of 08, you would have had the sunny summer memories beat to death. In august, we got just under a week of sun (and VFR wx). Gotta be honest, it was nice to see the sun today.

Today (and maybe tomorrow, if we're really good and the weather gods like us), was more of the exception as of late rather than the rule. I will be the first to admit that it was a great day, though.

clunckdriver wrote:Landed just ahead of a very large cell yesterday, today another bloody great blob headed our way on the radar, have never seen the local lakes so full at this time of the year, sure hope we get a break soon, only the grand kids have been in the pool this year, mind you they would swim if it was plus one C. The next farm down the road claimes that this is the most rain since he started keeping records in 1957!
We should start laying pipe to flow alla that rainwater from Ontario to Alberta . After a record-setting cold winter ( e.g, March 11, YEG was 12 degrees C colder than any day since 1880, several other coldest days since 1880 in '09 ), June is the driest on record; previous driest June was 1949-11millimeters; June 2009 cental Alberta driest on record with only 9 millimeters.
....The driest June ever across Alberta, extending into parts of Saskatchewan, is scorching soccer fields, scratching golf courses, affecting crops and wildlife reproduction and prompting a ban on private fireworks....
I'm thinking the longest solar cycle lull of the industrial age, combined with the Pacicfic decadal oscillation returning to a cold phase after 30 years of warm phase, ( Arctic ice cover returned to the 1979-2000 mean in '09 ) factors into the natural variations we're seeing.

Or, as already mentioned, it really is that Ottawa hot air machine turned up to full bore thats screwing up the weather . (:
