Class 4 Written
Yes yes I did a search. Looking for some up to date information on this exam. I'm a little weak on my general knowledge, so im boosting that right now before I go write. Just curious about any surprises or tricky questions or whatever information anyone has!
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Class 4 Written
Learning Factors from the FIG are always a favourite. DME question(s) and basic CPL intercept questions.....like the Study and Reference Guide says...just know everything relating to PPL, CPL the FIG and the CAR's. lol

All of the above plus review human factors (eg what effect does rain on the windshield have flying on final approach ? ) and aerodynamic theory (eg why does dihedral casue a banked aircraft to return to wings level ?)
Re: Class 4 Written
My wife did her Class 4 FI written about 6 months ago. She said it was very difficult (she still passed, no thanks to me.) She said there were lots of obscure air law questions, such as requirements for a PPL for a person from another country, etc.

My class 4 written was one of the easiest exams I've ever done. I was done in 45 minutes and spent 2 hours reviewing every question.
Re: Class 4 Written
Seems like each persons test experience was different. I know some people who say they never had an easier test while others say it was a bitch of an exam with questions making them go wtf? Tends to turn it into a pissing contest....
durrrr I did it in 5mins and wasted 4 of those minutes on one question. With others saying time given was barely enough. Everyone is different some eat test for breakfast and midmorning snack (I know a few people who prefer them to the flight exam) while others drown no matter the prep they do.
From MY experience and understanding that this exam can be considered an extension of a commercial exam (giving credit to the low time puppy mill theory). It just makes room for "instructor stuff". MY (class IV) test only had about 25% - 33% instructor info with the rest being things "you should/shall know/how to do" as a commercial pilot.

What you need to know is, how to get what you need to know.

Re: Class 4 Written
Let's not forget that I studied very hard for the exam.
There's something to remember; you either know your stuff or you don't. If you don't, it WILL show on the class 4 written. No question about it. Think of this exam as the exam that will show how well you paid attention in your PPL and CPL ground school.
People who barely passed general knowledge in their PPAER and CPAER will definitely have a tough time on this exam. Don't even bother writing it until you can proficiently score in your 90's on the Commercial Sample Questions out there because the part that is easy about this exam is the first 60 pages that you have to memorize from the FIG. Or as mentioned above a very small percentage.

Absolutely! I wrote the Class IV this week and like most of the TC exams, some of them are really hard, others are a breeze, depends on how lucky you are. My exam had some tricky theory of flight questions, 3 GPS questions (all regarding how many satelittes), flight test requirements for PPL and CPL and validity of the Class IV. NO MET questions!! (at least on mine). Hope that helps, good luck!loopa wrote:Let's not forget that I studied very hard for the exam.

Keep em coming guys!
I know its an old saying but...for every one student who puts up his hand to ask a question there are six more out there with the same one(Or something along those lines) Im sure im not the only guy whose about to write. The general knowledge is definitely the "scariest" part for me, It's not that I don't feel like im up to par, its that there is such a large amount from that area they can ask you.
Its nice to see pilots helping pilots!
Appreciate all the feedback

I too wrote the Class 4 very recently, and I may have had the same exam as ctmorawetz! GPS satellite questions, DME, age requirements for licences, a couple of 703 CARS-type questions, no MET, and a few human factors. I'm pretty sure it's the first exam I've written where I didn't have to bust out a calculator whether it be of the conventional or flight variety.
THEORY OF FLIGHT!!! Know what's going on during stalls, climbing/descending turns and spins in terms of angle of attack of each wing and stall. Lift/drag ratio too.
Know who can instruct what, in terms of multi-engine, floats, VFR OTT, etc.
Review how instruments operate, I know I got a few questions on that.
In terms of studying, the FTM and FGU help, I also found the Pultz manual to be very helpful. Obviously the Flight Instructor Guide is a big resource, and the TC Human Factors books are nice, but I wouldn't say a necessity. The section on human factors in the AIR section of the AIM is helpful in that regard, but kind of lacking on the illusions parts. Illusions are big on this exam. And by making PGI's you are very much studying for the exam.
Lastly, when it comes to studying, there are some RANDOM INRAT/CPL-type questions so no matter how much you study, you WILL get asked about something you did not review, so you will either know it or not, don't be bothered to stress out about that. I know I wished I had studied some more going into the exam, but afterwards I realized that the extra stuff I wanted to study wouldn't have helped me anyway.
Hope that's helpful, and good luck!

Re: Class 4 Written
Let's be honest here; general knowledge isn't something that you study. It's something that you understand.
I know I might be going against what I said earlier about practicing sample questions; but general knowledge is something you learn and build a foundation of throughout your training. And if you don't; good luck with your future.
In my opinion, a strong foundation of general knowledge is the thing that sets apart guys in their ground school course with an airline. It makes sense.
I'm no where close to being an airline pilot, but the many friends that do fly for them tell me what I just passed on. And I agree 150% with it.
If the above mentioned applies to you; don't freak out ! If you're a low timer, you still have time to improve. But the thing I ask every loyal class 4 candidate is to NOT RUSH getting the instructor rating done. There are no jobs out there anyway; even if your company promises you a job, don't expect to fly much. So spend this perfect time to become a solid instructor.
Best of luck to everybody !
