RYANAIR: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard And Reduce Cabin Crew To Lower Costs
Apr 01, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Ryanair, the world's favourite airline, has announced that it will install vending machines onboard its 225 aircraft in a drive to further reduce costs and increase ancillary revenues through increased passenger choice. From June 2010 Ryanair passengers will be able to purchase hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, snacks, ice-cream, condoms and smokeless cigarettes directly from onboard vending machines.
Ryanair said that the phased installation of vending machines will allow it to reduce its cabin crew teams onboard from four to two who will perform safety announcements and ensures passenger seatbelts are securely fastened. The substantial savings which this initiative will generate will then be passed on to the travelling public in the form of lower fares.
Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said: "Ryanair is delighted to announce the installation of our onboard vending machines which will provide passengers with an extensive choice of in-flight snacks and drinks, allowing Ryanair to reduce crew members, lower costs and pass on lower fares to the travelling public.
"We are confident that our self-service vending machines and our more efficient cabin crew teams will prove popular this summer."

that's what I was thinking also!
Re: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard
Even if it is a april fools joke. I don't think the cabin crew at ryanair would find it funny thinking a simple vending machine can replace them. Hopefully the "Employee relations" team there thought this trough before relaesing the press or unless the CEO is trying to send a subliminal message.

April 1st or not, Ryanair is famous for rocking the boat with outrageous ideas that get slipped into the news just for publicity. Remember the whole "Coin operated Lavatory" idea! This is just something else to keep there publicity people happy!! Even though its BS and you need F/A's to legally fly with pax onboard!
Re: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard
Aprils fools joke I think, unless this is a way of increasing the use of the coin operated lav.bmc wrote:RYANAIR: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard And Reduce Cabin Crew To Lower Costs

As much as I hate to say this, I would love to see these "joke" carriers disappear for good, and let the mainline carriers regain control and bring back the positive aspects of this industry for everyone involved in it, just like in the old days....
sure people will pay the price, but maybe 're-educating' is something that needs to be brought back?
Pathetic is an understatement

Re: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard
If that were to come true, at least you wouldn't be sitting in the cattle-class starving or dying of thirst because the cabin crew are hiding behind a curtain trying to figure out who knocked up who in the last month.
I could at least get up, plug the machine and get a can of pop and bag of pretzels for lets say ... oh, $20 in quarters .... and then head back to the stockyard and sit down between two 400 lb Michael Moore look-a-likes with flatulence problems.

Re: Ryanair To Install Vending Machines Onboard
I was thinkin the 10 dollar pretzels could be used for energey for the next event,,,which will entail the use of the condoms, HOWEVER, you will need the right number of coins for the SMOKELESS cigs for after the big event in the washroom ,,,,,,

Another thing ryanair should consider stocking in the vending machines are adult diapers and a change of pants, air freshener might be needed too

++1 Excellent comment MapleFlag !!!!MapleFlag wrote:The cabin crew are the core of the "SAFETY" team. The flight crew might be the one's who say "evacuate/evacuate" but the cabin crew "gets it done". In-flight service is a nice function offered for the travelling public, not essential. The require number of cabin crew is defined by the regulator, not the operator, for "SAFETY" not service. I for one want as many cabin crew as possible onboard not less!!! For the "SAFETY" of the travelling public I hope this is only a publicity stunt and not an industry trend. When any operator tries to save money by reducing the "SAFETY" margins we should all take notice. If this is the future of cabin "SAFETY" then someone is seriously missing the point. The train is starting to look better and better everyday, does VIA have a frequent traveller plan yet?
Does that qualify as a RANT; I think it qualifies as a RANT, I feel much better now.

Solaris ... I wish I'd thought of that. I could have ended my active aviation career 5 years earlier. There's gold in them thar Depends!Solaris wrote: Good luck trying to get down the aisle to the vending machines OFD,,,it will be packed with people lining up for the lav,![]()

With thought processes like that Solaris, you're on your way to a very sucessful decade or two in the airline industry.

I never thought I would have to post this but, you might want to look at the date of my original post.
This story was run in Europe as an April Fool's joke.
Not surprisingly, most people saw this as the next evolution of Michael O'leary's vision.
Ryanair seems to be doing ok, with 230 Boeings in the fleet, serving 153 destinations. Modern fleet. Good on-time. Reclining seats would be nice. But for 1-3 hour flights paying dick all for airfares, it's fine by me. My daughter flew from Oslo to Dublin for St.Patricks Day for CDN $50 return, taxes and charges included. I took the family to London for a week at Christmas two years ago, flying from Grenoble-Isere airport, for CDN $400 total. That's for four people. $100 each person, round trip, taxes, charges, etc. 1.5 hr flight.
O'Leary is a dickhead. But, he makes the news, everybody knows him, everybody loves to hate him and he pisses people off. He also manages to pack airplanes. For those kind of savings on airfares, I'd pay a 1 Euro to take a leak. Alternatively, I could pay hundreds of dollars more to fly on other airlines for the privedge of a free piss.
You can't overlook the fact Ryanair grows the market and makes money. He steals traffic off the roads and trains. Flies to under utilized airports and brings affordable flying to the market.
