Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
Hi guys. I applied to Porter in September and I got a call the other day for an interview. The interview went pretty good as far as I could tell. The manager called me back today and said if I want the job they will send me to Toronto this coming Friday just for one day. I'm only applying for a ramp attendant position, so I don't see why they are doing this.
The manager never told me that I had the job. She said something about another interview or something. Does anyone know if I'm being interviewed in Toronto, and what to expect? I'm thinking I have the job... why would they send me to Toronto if I never? Anyways, I could just ask her if I have it, but I don't want to look foolish.
Thanks!

They fly you up to YTZ to do a second interview. I don't know the questions they ask you, but probably just in regards to why you want to work for Porter and what you will bring to the company, etc. etc.
What station are you from?

Ahh I see. Thanks. I'm from YYT.
Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
It's common practice to fly you to Toronto for the second interview..to get the 'Porter Experience'. The common questions are 'how would deal with a difficult co-worker', time-management...two planes on the ground at the same time, that kind of stuff.
I started out in YOW, and after the interview they said they would call within a few days but ended up being called the next day.
Do you know what your flight number is? You might see me on the ramp at YTZ
I wouldn't sweat the interview too much, it's all common sense stuff.
Good luck!!

Thanks skyler. I don't know for sure what flight I'll be on, but PD 256 seems to be the most obvious one to me. I'm not too worried about the interview, I have ramp experience so that will certainly help.
Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
It seems like all companies interview the same way..."Tell us of a time when you've had difficulty with a co-worker and how did you handle it".
Ramp experience always helps! Though Porter does hire those without it, so as not to bring bad habits from other companies.
Again good luck! And hope you get an answer or call soon after.

Now that depends on how many gates YHZ will let us have, or if we can wrangle them away from Air Canada. Otherwise it will sit and wait. Pissing everyone off.skyler wrote:two planes on the ground at the same time, that kind of stuff.

Hey guys. Thanks for the responses. I went to the island yesterday and had my interview and it went well. I must say that the Porter lounge is amazing! I have an email setting me up for a medical, so I guess I got the job
. Also yesterday on my flight to Toronto there was a FA named Cam... That wasn't you by any chance was it, Cam?
Also they asked me in both of my interviews what I do with my idle time at work. What do Porter rampies do with idle time? At my other ramp job we could pretty much do whatever we wanted.

Glad the interview went well! The medical is eyes, ears, several blood tests and urine..for the drug test.
Idle time: depends on who you ask. Me, in between flights I help in the bagroom or help on other flights. I love the ramp and can't sit around reading a paper or whatever, unlike some of the lazy people we have in YTZ
I've seen crews scramble for wands because they didn't bother checking before the flight, have to drive around looking for a lav cart, not bring enough bag carts, or..as usual, show up after the flight has actually arrived. It will be what you make of it...you've worked the ramp before so know whats going on.
In case Cam doesn't answer, he's a Rampie in YHZ, not an F/A.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
A friend of mine was recently hired for a ramp job at YTZ. They interviewed in 3 times + drug/health tested him. 3 personal interviews seems very excessive for a $12 position slinging gas and waving orange wands. You'd figure the first interview (with the employment agency) could be done via phone...

Basic "structured interview" question.
I hate them.

Ahh I see. Thanks. This is going to take forever before I actually start working...
Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
Shouldn't be too long, the medical results came back fairly quickly. Did you just do the interview in YTZ? You'll have to go back to pick up the uniform, unless they have something set up at YYT.

Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
Was just thinking, don't know how they do it for people at the out-out stations. YYT-YHZ-YOW-YTZ is a long way to go to pick up a uniform. Except for the shirts, which say Porter, most guys I know where their own pants. The gear you get is:
1 pair shorts, 2 pair long pants, 2 short sleeve shirts, 1 long sleeve shirt, 1 t-shirt, 1 ballcap, rain gear, 1 spring/fall jacket, and 1 winter jacket...though might have changed in the past two years since I've been with them.
Pilot/FA/CSR uniforms are tailored so they would have to travel to YTZ for that.

Why do they drug test? I fail to see how smoking a joint during your off time has any effect on your work performance as a rampie....
For 12 a hour this all seems extreme, just another example of how the industry exploits the people desperate to work in it.

Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
Why do airlines drug test pilots? I don't see how smoking a joint in your off time makes you any worse of a pilot? The way I see it, people who are using any sort of drug are not ideally suited for being around aircraft as you never know if they will be prone to using on the job. When dealing with aircraft I would rather not take chances. It isn't so much the weed that they test for but other more dangerous substances as well.westcoasting wrote:Why do they drug test? Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
the drug test is most likely an insurance thing. you think they really give a f*ck whether a rampie smokes up on his time off? no. they do however care if said rampie is high at work and drives a fuel truck into a wing causing a hundred grand in damage and the insurance company won't pay for it cause the dude had reefer in his blood.....
Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
Hi BeechjetYKZ. Your footnote really made me laugh ("Nothing cleans a dirty plane like 100LL!!"). Any good results with jetfuel too?

Re: Porter flying me to Toronto - Ramp Attendant
These days aviation is not the only area that does pre employment drug screening, alot of places do it. Working in the oil patch, truck drivers and the list goes on and on. Seems to be the norm more than the exception now.
