Congratulations to the lefties for propping up Gaddafi!one can draw a straight line from this new “soft power” foreign policy to Washington’s paralysis over what to do in Libya, where the regime in Tripoli is waging scorched-earth warfare on the country’s rebel forces.
At this stage, it seems the only thing that can stop Col. Gaddafi’s rampaging forces is the sort of quick, unilateral military intervention that fell out of fashion after the Iraq War. But, having made a fetish of international law, multilateralism, and the Security Council’s moral authority in 2003, many world leaders — including, apparently, Mr. Obama — are afraid to act in 2011, lest a bloody or prolonged operation invite the familiar chorus of accusations involving oil, imperialism and Islamophobia.
In other words: What the humanitarian, anti-war left sowed in Iraq, it is now reaping in Libya.

Re: Anti-War Left & Libya
"U.S. diplomatic personnel reopened the U.S. Interest Section in Tripoli on February 8, 2004. The mission was upgraded to a U.S. Liaison Office on June 28, 2004, and to a full embassy on May 31, 2006.
The U.S. terminated the applicability of the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act to Libya and President Bush signed an Executive Order on September 20, 2004 terminating the national emergency with respect to Libya and ending IEEPA-based economic sanctions. This action had the effect of unblocking assets blocked under the Executive Order sanctions. Restrictions on cargo aviation and third-party code-sharing have been lifted."
This during a time when every human rights group, press freedom group, democracy index placed Libya at or near the bottom, and Libya prisons were choking with political prisoners and the oppostion was begging for outside help.
But George Bush along with his triple entente Blair and Berlusconi took Ghaddafi out of international isolation, in order to put weight behind his ridiculous notion that his adventure in Iraq was bearing fruits in the MENA region. In the state of the Union address that year:
"Because of American leadership and resolve (in Iraq), the world is changing for the better. Last month, the leader of Libya voluntarily pledged to disclose and dismantle all of his regime's weapons of mass destruction programs, including a uranium enrichment project for nuclear weapons. Colonel Qadhafi correctly judged that his country would be better off, and far more secure, without weapons of mass murder. Nine months of intense negotiations involving the United States and Great Britain succeeded with Libya."

"A senior official said there were no records of any other US president speaking with Ghaddafi"
"The two leaders discussed that this agreement should help to bring a painful chapter in the history between our two countries closer to closure."
"The United States will continue to work on the bilateral relationship with Libya, with the aim of establishing a dialogue that encompasses all subjects, including human rights, reform, and the fight against terrorism," he added.
And what were the PC, left wing Liberals saying about Ghaddafi at this time? "Rights groups say Gaddafi's reign has been marked by human rights abuses and restrictions on freedom of expression."

Is it possible to have a memory that only goes back farther than one week and still believe in the right wing rhetoric? I just cant see how the two are compatible.
Re: Anti-War Left & Libya
Well, the Arab League sort of punted, calling on the UN to approve a no-fly zone rather than simply asking America to do it.
Shouldn’t have to go through the U.N. ..Time for the Arabs to put on their big boy pants.
http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2011/ ... 41192.htmlThe Arab League said on Saturday it had called on the United Nations to impose a no-fly zone in Libya, in a decision that will provide the regional support NATO has said is needed for any military action.
Libyan rebels fighting Muammar Gaddafi have said a no-fly zone to ground Libyan warplanes and to prevent the moving of troops by helicopter is vital if its forces are to succeed.
"The Arab League has officially requested the U.N. Security Council to impose a no-fly zone against any military action against the Libyan people," Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa told a news conference after a meeting of the group.
The zone should be lifted once the crisis had ended, Moussa said. Oman's foreign minister said all Arab states had agreed on the need for a no-fly zone to protect Libyans.
Shouldn’t have to go through the U.N. ..Time for the Arabs to put on their big boy pants.

Re: Anti-War Left & Libya
So three weeks ago, the big fear was that the Muslim Brotherhood (Islamic Brotherhood? - i can't remember the name..) was going to seize power in Egypt and establish a Caliphate.
Now it's Libya. Who are the rebels/freedom fighters there? Why should we back them? Better a devil we know (Gadaffi) than one we don't (Rebels) perhaps?

Because the world can't count on Ghaddafi being there forever. Eventually the world will have to deal with whoever comes next. Either you or your kids or their kids. Pay me now or pay me later as the saying goes.

I believe the correct play here is to arm the rebels like the CIA did in Afghanistan in the 80s. This time however don' @#$! up the end game.

What took so long? Why don't the locals step up and do this already? Why are the (hated) Americans always the ones that get stuck with it?a no-fly zone in Libya

I swear if I could have a superpower it would be look up an IP and see all the sources of information a person uses to come up with some of this stuff.
Anyway, I suppose it does provide us all with endless hours of entertainment!

Re: Anti-War Left & Libya
It only took the USA three weeks to defeat Iraq. If the USA chose to, Libya could be done in 3 days.
But, that's not what the lefties want. The lefties liked Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and the Taliban in Afganistan, and I guess they like Kaddafi in Libya, too.
The lefties must be very happy that they are finally getting their way, and keeping dictators like Kaddaffi in power.

Three weeks? Do the 13 years that preceded it which included sanctions, disarmament, a devastating first gulf war, hundred of bombings, a Shiite rebellion and not a single new tank, plane or bullet count? Do the five years of insurgency that followed not count either? Three weeks to enact a military coup against an army as sad and dilapitated as Iraqs is not a demonstration of power or a great military victory. By comparasin Mubarak was overthrown in 18 days.

It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation.

You really believe that nonsense, or are you hoping that if you repeat it enough, it will somehow become true?an army as sad and dilapitated as Iraqs

In 2003 the Kiss army could have beat them. No air force, no air defence the only weapons they had were watever survived the gulf war and the following 13 years. Wow, what an epic battle.

Re: Anti-War Left & Libya
The revisionism here is incredible. Iraq had an awesome military in 2003, which was completely destroyed by the USA in 3 weeks:
On Dec. 31, 2000, all three services of the Iraqi armed forces -- Army, Air and Naval troops -- took part in a grand military parade in Baghdad, along with the elite Republican Guard, the Border Guards, the Special Forces and the Saddam Fedayyeen, a militia run by President Saddam Hussein's elder son, Udai. The troops were armed with some 1,000 tanks and hundreds of surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles.
The Iraqi president is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, which receive direct combat operation orders from the defense minister, the chief of general staff and commanders of theArmy, Air and Naval forces.
Iraqi Army, which numbers 375,000 soldiers, including the 50,000-60,000-strong Republican Guard, is still the largest fighting force in the Middle East. An additional of 50,000 troops could be called up for active duty in emergencies.
Saddam mobilized nearly one million troops in the Gulf War, including 650,000 reserve forces, who could be put on active duty from the age of 18 to 45.
According to the Jane's Information, the Army comprises 23 regular army divisions -- three armored divisions, three mechanized divisions, 11 infantry divisions and six Republican Guard divisions. The Army is equipped with 2200 tanks, 3700 armored vehicles, 2000 artilleries and 500 anti-aircraft guns, as well as six missile batteries.
Iraqi Air Force consists of 30,000 men, of whom about 17,000 are attached to its subordinate Air Defense Command. The Air Forcehas various types of fighter planes, including five Mig-25s, four Mig-29s, 30 Mig-23s, 20 Su-22s, five Su-24s and 20 Mirage F1, and nine transport planes -- two An-22s, six An-24s and one Il-76.
As many as 100 helicopters are also operational, although these gunships form the Army Air Corps.

Yeah they also said Iraq could launch chemical weapons in 45 minutes and they had a huge stockplie of advanced scuds. Then we were also assured the war would be a "cakewalk". the war we were assured it would be an easy victory with minimum casualties and when its over we find out that they were up against the strongest army around. lol i guess it depends who youre trying to convinceHedley wrote:The revisionism here is incredible. No, I meant you are the kind of person who is easy to convince, usually by telling them exactly what they want to hear. No coincidence you keep going back to the national Post for your sources is it? let me guess all the other news sources are left wing bleeding heart slanted PC dribble right? A closed mind and an open National Post were made for each other, whatever ignorance is bliss...

"My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all"
"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"
"I blame Al-Jazeera - they are marketing for the Americans!"
"God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis."
'We have destroyed 2 tanks, fighter planes, 2 helicopters and their shovels - We have driven them back."
"Surrender or be burned in their tanks."
"No I am not scared and neither should you be!"
"We have them surrounded in their tanks"
Britain "is not worth an old shoe."

"They do not even have control over themselves! Do not believe them!"
"Faltering forces of infidels cannot just enter a country of 26 million people and lay besiege to them! They are the ones who will find themselves under siege. Therefore, in reality whatever this miserable Rumsfeld has been saying, he was talking about his own forces. Now even the American command is under siege."
"They tried to bring a small number of tanks and personnel carriers in through al-Durah but they were surrounded and most of their infidels had their throats cut."
"We made them drink poison last night and Saddam Hussein's soldiers and his great forces gave the Americans a lesson which will not be forgotten by history. Truly."

"NO", snapped Mr al-Sahaf, "We have retaken the airport. There are NO Americans there. I will take you there and show you. IN ONE HOUR!"
