Medical requirements - I turned 40 a month after my last med

Post by Sulako »

I'm confused, and kinda stupid. Please help!

I did my last Cat 1 medical at the end of June, 2011.

I turned 40 on July 30th, 2011.

When is my next Cat 1 medical due? Is it January 1st 2012, Feb 1st 2012? June 2012? I have looked through this page and I am still unable to figure it out.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... 2-1412.htm

Please help this poor simple-minded moderator out! :)

My doctor says you're good for a year, so 1st July 2012!

PS From here on in, do your medicals every 7 months and
give yourself a 16% discount.

The last medical exam you did before you reached 40 should be good for 12 months; July 1st 2012. Where do you read it otherwise?

The way I read 404.04(6), if the licence holder (you) is over 40 (you again) then the medical certificate validity period is 6 months. I seem to be in the minority though. I don't understand why we pay these lawyers so much to write laws if what they write is so unclear.

Thanks folks!

I started by looking at my fancy license booklet, and on the page with the medical validity chart (page 15) it says to reference CAR 424.04 (3). I looked that up, and predictably it said:

"(3) [deleted 2008/05/01; previous version] "

Gee, thanks TC.

So I looked at 404.04(6), and that's when it started to melt my brain.

I read 404.04 (6) the same way Ahramin read it, so I called Civil Aviation HQ and the nice lady who answered the phone said they go by your age at the time you did your medical, so she said that since I was 39 when I did my medical, I am good for a year, eg July 1st 2012. Problem solved! :)

Actually, it's: "within the 12 months preceding the examination after age 40." So with a bit of creativity, it's possible to get 3 medicals out of 1 ECG...

I had read it as Ahramin did as well where on the date you turn 40 and subsequent to that, you must have had a medical within the previous 6 months. However, Sulako has proven that incorrect. Thank you for that, but I still have a lot of years to go before I need to worry about it anyways :D...ok maybe not that many!

At least the lawyers for TC have their asses covered by being as vague as humanly possible while being able to screw you no matter how its interpreted.

I believe they refer to this as a "gray area".

Another option, for those of you wondering what information is on your file, is to access the General Aviation On-Line Services portal. Your license file is accessible, including medical dates and expiry dates.

Hi everyone. I'm going through something similar now that I'm 40. I understand the 12 month validity period but am getting conflicting answers about my next medical now that I am 40.

I had my medical in April 2012 so I am valid until the 1st day of May 2013.

I work a 6 month contract from late April until early September. I had hoped to get a medical here in Thompson, MB in April before leaving for work but the doctor is not based here anymore and has no idea when he will be available in April (I know, don't get me started). I can get an appointment in March but, the way I see it, my medical would expire on the 1st day of Sept. I spoke to a couple of people from Transport and neither could answer for sure but they thought it would be the 1st day of October. I thought it would be the first day of Sept but am unsure.

Life was so much simpler when I was 39

Thanks for any input.

After 40, your class 1 expires on the first day of the 7th month following the medical.

March medical = Oct 1st expiry
April Medical = Nov 1st expiry

Thank you very much. March will work for me then. I was concerned because of the uncertainty from Transport. Getting older sucks but thankfully I feel like I'm still in my 20s.

I was just about to ask a question very similar to this as I was debating this with my buddy Saturday night
He did his medical in 08 right at the beginning of when he was doing his PPL, got his licence in 09. His licence says medical done in 08 and issued in 09.

I figured it would be this year but he says he has one more year, I think He better error on the side of caution, but what do you guys think? Does he have to do his medical this year or does he have 1 more year?

List the month and year he had his last medical, his age, and the category of medical and we'll try to help.

One thing to remember, to make this all simpler, the validity period is based on the age you were when you DID the medical, not the age you are now! I think everyone that crosses 40 askes this. Do the check one day before your 40th (when you were still 39) and your good for the year.

The date the medical was done and the date the licence was issued are two unrelated items. However, the licence is valid as long as there is a current medical related to it. I presume your buddy is under 40 and holds a PPL (requiring a CAT 3 medical), which means his medical is valid for 5 years, so it is due in 2013. Doesn't matter when he actually got his licence.

And don't forget this audiogram requirement, as both my CAME and myself did, when you turn 55:
The applicant shall be tested on a pure tone audiometer at the initial examination for a Medical Category I and at the first medical examination after age 55

A couple of things...
As CS pointed out. Wait a day and get an extra month...
However, the good news for most of you is that they are changing the medical periods I am told.
It will be 12 month to age 60..

I dont know if it is correct or when it will be implemented. I was to pissed off when I heard it..
The bloody liquor laws in the province I was raised changed from 21 to 18...exactly 3 days after my 21st birthday..Now , after some 40 plus medicals in the last few years (TC only..I get 7..count em..7 a year now)....they are changing the validity period...of course after I am over 60..bastards.

Anyway, I believe it has been gazetted so should come into force in the near future.

BTW..My Canadian CAME took pity on me and waived my last ecg as I had had two in the previous three months..
