Cool story. I hope he succeeds. They must have a lot of money though.

I don't see why this is news.
Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
Isn't that just SO special. His Dad is going with him. My frikken CAT (no relation to a poster by a similar name!) could fly across Canada if I went with him!
How will he survive this dare devil feat?? Solo. With Dad. Across the uncharted "wilds" of Canada.
I need a break!

A good start for the young lad. I managed to read the entire article and was slightly disturbed by his willingness to "rock out" to his music player. I think a young person attempting a daring feat such as this would want to focus is 5 senses on the task at hand and not just joyride across the country. Best of luck on your cross canada trip.

Cool story.
Not to play the one up game, but when I was 17 I flew a 150 from Winnipeg to Vancouver by myself. I didn't go running to the papers then;)

Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
I'm assuming since he's sixteen, he'll be doing this as a student pilot.
I won't know what to do if his resume shows up on my desk in four years or so. On the one hand, I would put him to the front of the line of rampies waiting for a flying position on account of his high PIC, just to piss off the other rampies.
On the other hand, I might take a dim view of someone who took hundreds of hours to get their private.
What's a jerk to do?

I can answer that ...What's a jerk to do?
I know why you read National Geographic ....I followed him in National Geographic
Meh. His licence booklet will be the same colour as everyonehundreds of hours to get their private
else's. Years ago, a friend of mine, for his PPL x/c, flew from
Ontario to BC and back, in his buck-fifty. He was old enough
to know better, though. I sure as heck wouldn't fly an underpowered
150 through the Rockies!

Kid's been posting all over reddit's aviation forum. I think he's doing it with a rec permit.I'm assuming since he's sixteen, he'll be doing this as a student pilot.

A good friend of mine flew solo from YYC to the left coast, back through YYC onto the right coast, then back to YYC. Did all this solo too. And he was 18 when he did it. Did it in a rented 182 with no financial help from anyone. I hope the kid does well but it has been done a few times.

I went From Tofino to Abottsford with another low time guy. Abbotsford to YYC by myself in a warrior then a month later YYC - DCA and back, took my dad on that trip but he is not a pilot. Now I'm a nanny and type stuff on here.
If I was nine years younger would I have been in the news?

Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
One of my friends flew a 182 on floats from somewhere on the coast through the mountains and up to somewhere way up North. He had his share of trials and tribulations. Amphibs on a 182 ought to be even more fun. I hope the kid has a good time. Nice way to spend time with his Dad, and at least he's not hanging around in a mall listening to rap music and trying to steal things like most people his age.

Not sure why you're asking, Beef.....nothing unusual about a guy in his early 40s doing a long cross-country in a single piston...Beefitarian wrote:If I was nine years younger would I have been in the news?

Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
G'day
I watched him during an interview on the CTV Sudbury affilate the other day. He was interviewed sitting in the left seat of his father's amphib C-185. Yes he has a rec licence. He said his father would be following him in another aircraft.
Cheers...Chris

Aware that no one can concentrate fully for hours on end, he is planning to vary his on-board routine. And to help pass the time, he will pack his iPod, which has “a massive playlist.”

Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
I enjoyed reading some of the comments on the Globe & Mail, particularly the one by LedZepplin:
However, I agree that this is a little over the top to be an article in the National section of the Globe. It is just not newsworthy and it is more the type of thing I'd expect to read in the local paper, or perhaps in the Life section of the Globe. I think most of us are a little envious though; I wish I would have had this opportunity when I was 16 and it is time well spent for the young lad. At least for a few weeks he won't be with his buddies trying to figure out how to get a peak or a poke in the girls' shower room at Summer Camp.
Well, some of you guys are a little tough. I am sure it is a big deal for the 16 year old and, if he is planning to work towards higher licenses, what better way to build Cross Country time than going Cross Country? This is how the 1% spend their youth.
Globe & Mail journalists hankering to fan his vanity.

Way to go kid! Have fun and enjoy it. I was taking flying lessons at age 17 and wished I could have started earlier too.

Re: High school student to attempt solo flight across Canada
I could care less if he's solo has an ipod or a monkey banging cymbols in the right seat.
I like that he IS doing this with his ol' man. That's the kind of adventure I would have loved to do at 16 (or any age for that matter) with my ol' man. The bond they will share at the end of this journey...priceless.
IMO.
