Any one working for Calm Air out there?
Is AMO still around? If so is there any way someone could get a picture of it? My dad worked on the thing for over 20 years when it was owned by Amoco. I thought he would like a picture of it in its new life especially since he spent time in Churchill. If there is any one out there who could help me out I greatly appreciate it.
Cheers

AMO is parked now, missing an engine.

Re: calm air amo
Those Calm Air guys deserve some kudos for taking those things into the places they do. These aren't the nice government maintained runways we get in Northern Ontario. Some of those strips in Northern MB and Nunavut are really quite rough.
The ATR and Dash pilots too. Pretty impressive.

Re: calm air amo
Talking to a friend there sounds like they were the first ones to ever take a ATR 72 into an ice strip, although now that First Air has them I am sure they are also doing it.
Re: calm air amo
I'm not sure if it was a 72 or 42 but the lady I saw operating off the ice this winter sure did a heck of a job with it.

Didn't AMO have a Janitrol heater and an APU in it when Amoco flew it?

Avro 748s are f**cking AWESOME aeroplanes. I will really be sad when they aren't around anymore. They are definitely a tool of the previous generation. Total respect to people who fly them.

Re: calm air amo
We had one on the ramp in my area recently; they are a nice looking airplane but do they all make that high pitched whine after start up? This particular one was so high pitched and so loud I thought all the glass in the area was going to fracture.

Re: calm air amo
I seem to remember most of the noise from the Dart engine comes from the front, the first stage impeller. There's a mod that extends the nose cowling by a few inches and adds noise absorbing honeycomb material inside the cowling. Apparently it cuts about 10 decibels off the whine.
Re: calm air amo
I'm pretty sure the superchargers contribute to the lovely racket as well.
I miss the old Hawker as well. Awsome airplane!!

Re: calm air amo
spent about 20 years off and on with the old avro strapped to my ass --- yup a keeper for sure -- many places have heard the rolls royce alarm clocks in the morning

Re: calm air amo
Wasnt Calm Air, but after a particularly smokey startup on a -30 day in Frobisher I asked the crew of the FA Hawker if they needed me to call the fire-department.
Re: calm air amo
Smoked out a few airports with the hawker on those cold mornings, and had more than a couple fss workers asking if we need assistance. As far as noise, any where we pulled in everyone would greet us with their hands on their ears. We called it the hawker salute, lol

It's ok, it's old enough to smoke.

Re: calm air amo
Awesome! Thanks guys! I think my Dad will appreciate to know it still had a productive life. I don't know if it had a janitrol or an APU. I do know that Calm Air really gutted it to save weight. Cool plane. Wish I had the opportunity to fly one.
thanks again.
thanks again.
Re: calm air amo
I think that one pic is Elk Island rather than North Knife, the pic I posted is North Knife and as far as I know the only time a Hawker (AMO) landed there. The cold weather starts are incredible, I remember one complaint in YBK that we we set off the terminal building smoke detectors. Love it.

Here's a shot of hawker CF-MAL, the first HS-748 in service in Canada, the second is CF-MAK. I was on the delivery flight from the factory, can't beat that new aircraft smell. Now, if you really want to shut down an airport with -40F smoke, you need an Argosy, affectionately known as "The screaming wheelbarrow"

Re: calm air amo
I'll bet not many on here know who Midwest was and where they operated --
