Apple in the plane

Post by 172sMatt »

What would you guys buy right now. Would you buy a new ipad (3) or a macbook air?

I like the idea of having the IPad and running some sort of flight software and having it in the plane with me and also as a tool to get Wx, and to aid in flight planning

I also think that there is sofware for the macbook that would do what I want as well.

I'm torn....maybe both?

Neither. I hate that crap in planes. Some guy had one of those iCub things the other day, it seemed so wrong in a tube and fabric airplane.

Conversation between a captain and an f/o at my company:

F/o: Can I use your approach plates? my ipad just died.
Captain: No, you should have thought of that before you relied on your ipad. Now brief me the approach

iPad.

I work at a 702 company and we are paperless in the cockpit. Saves a ton of weight, is incredibly efficient, and is a huge bonus to situational awareness.

There's a thread on here with some good posts and ideas, so do a search!

Then your company either hasn't issued appropriate training/rules and ops manual updates (and therefore you shouldn't be using/relying on any kind of EFB) and/or the FO - and therefore the captain isn't following them (never mind being a douchebag after the fact.) If it's not your company SOP to use the iPad and it's not approved in the ops manual, the captain shouldn't have permitted the FO to use it. ALSO, if your company has done this properly you should have a power source in the cockpit to charge the iPad, so this won't be an issue.

Not rocket science if, again, it's done PROPERLY and LEGALLY....

The IPAD has some really great applications from Jepp for it, including moving map airport diagrams for taxiing that can really help with situational awareness at larger airports, or those that you are unfamiliar with. It's also very handy to have approach plates all set up, so you can easily flip between plates relevant for the approach, missed and enroute sections. You can also keep company FOM/Ops manuals on it and bookmark important pages. Also if it's 3g compatible you have access to instant weather updates from the flight deck on the ground. They are certified for class 1 EFB's and can be mounted to side windows etc with suction cup mounts to keep them easily in view. I'd rather have an Ipad paperless cockpit than have charts/plates all over the place.

Great tool. (the ships library will have paper backup plates etc in the event that the Ipad isn't working in the event the guy you are flying with has such poor CRM tht he tells you to go stuff yourself if your Ipad dies and you can't charge it onboard).

I got the macbook air, but would never bring it along on a flight. If you are looking for something to use in the cockpit, get the iPad. If you want a good computer for the rest of the time, get the macbook air.

I have no need for anything like that in the air, I think it is more of a toy than anything. I have put a few apps on my phone, but never once have used it when flying so deleted them all. I just don't see any real value of an iPad aside from reducing paper use...but I prefer paper plates anyway.

I don't think my fancy new leg strap will fit a MacBook.

Air Navigation Pro seems a useful app...it's the only ipad app that has VFR maps for Canada AFAIK. Also has a built-in logbook which automatically records your flights, etc. Not quite as useful as the garmin GPS devices (doesn't have W&B, sunrise/sunset and a few other useful tools), but for $50 it's pretty good value. Haven't used it in the cockpit yet.

However if you don't already have an ipad, it might be better to just buy a Garmin Aera 500 or similar, unless you intend using the ipad for other things.
