How to get hired at Westjet
Im currently an apprentice and was just wondering the best way to get hired by westjet. I've applied online on their website, and keep checking daily for any updates or new openings. Is it all about who you know?
Re: How to get hired at Westjet
I currently work at North Cariboo Air, on King Air 100, Beech 1900 and Dash 8 100's.
I'm sure Westjet would prefer someone with more 737 experience, and i am looking for that relative work, but the main goal is to get on with Westjet.

The regional is screwing things up for mtc. I think that the managers are taking a bit of a wait and see approach which will be good for people in the end.

Don't be heartbroken if you have to stay where you are for a while. I hear you guys are pretty well paid.Shell27 wrote:I currently work at North Cariboo Air, on King Air 100, Beech 1900 and Dash 8 100's.

Someone told me we like hiring apprentices instead of experienced ame's. That way we can train them the way we want. Rumor only from one of our ame's.
Re: How to get hired at Westjet
I can't really agree with the statement that "we are more likely to hire apprentices over licensed guys"
In my experience the hiring has been dependent on bases. There are only a few bases throughout the country that could really benefit from having a green horn. Toronto has been hiring a mix of AME's and apprentices. I for one also agree that it seems management is really taking a wait and see approach with what is happening with regional. Last time I asked, no one is certain what the tech ops department is going to look like with a second type. Only my crystal ball can tell me who will take promotions or jump to regional for various reasons and I think the hiring will be totally dependent on how that all plays out coming into the start of 2013.
You are best to just keep and eye on the website and keep your resume current. If you know anyone working here. It doesn't hurt to keep an ear to the ground
Just my 2 cents, but who am I to know !

Another thing to consider is to apply for a Furnishing or Air Supply position. If you are already in the system and employed by WJ, you will on the short list if a rare maintenance job does become available. Even a part time bag chucking job at ATS might help you meet the right folks at WJ?? PM me if you would like some more information.
Re: How to get hired at Westjet
what i have heard is the reason behind the slowdown on hiring is because of the new compensation increment everyone in tech ops was given and thats why they are really squeezing the budget and slowed down on hiring ,no type courses this year ,training e.g. engine run up and boroscope cut down or may be its just because of the regional that they are keeping a tight hand on it .... only time will tell and as for shell it takes alot of tries its not easy to get hired with westjet lots of apprentices apply and you have to really be lucky and places like Vancouver you have to be super lucky as they hire the uselss ICS (home based training) guys who are csa or air supply and they somehow end up getting the jobs with no experience while the outsider who atleast knows how to lockwire his resume gets thrown away but hopefully with regional the hirings will be more and keep up the dash 8 experience will look good on your resume once they have the postings and you apply for it gdluck
Re: How to get hired at Westjet
I think the Hiring" slow down", training slow down etc. has alot to do with our slow delivery schedule this year. We arent taking on alot of new aircraft for 2012.Dont worry there are alot more deliveries coming. so unless guys are leaving, there isnt a whole pile of hiring to happen. Also type courses and boroscope etc.. would not be needed as a good number of guys already have the training. If our compensation change would do anything it would make it alot easier for a unlicensed guy to get his foot in the door.
Unfortunately it is very true that a furnishings, air supply, stores or even a groomer once they have there 6 months in and can apply for other internal postions have a far better chance then someone off the street. ( as long as they have there school certificate in hand) regardless of ICS, or some other accredited program.

Re: How to get hired at Westjet
Well, there ya go. I'm an AME with Air Canada, and I work with lots and lots of guys that were hired on as groomers, trim & finish techs, storesman, etc. Once they were in the door, they transfered to Maintenance. Get your foot in the door at Westjet, and I'll bet your Dash 8 experience will get you noticed pretty quick.
Good luck!

Good luck!

Pay has increased slightly over this scale due to annual cost of living.
