Old radial engine
Looking for an old radial engine in Manitoba, NWO, La Ronge?
Not looking to pay too much more than scrap, will spend out its days as a coffee table.
I've been poking around the float base and calling AME buddies in the know but it's not that time of year yet.
Any ideas?

Snoopy'd probably let you have this one for a decent price.

Re: Old radial engine
Try Kuby's Maintenance shop at Kenora Air. Last time I was in the old hangar, there was one in pieces that had no value and I know they munched another one sense then.

Re: Old radial engine
Spandau...I have thousands of hours flying behind a variety of radial engines. R2800, 1340, 985, 1830. The last thing I need is your sorrow. From the tone of your post its clearly evident that you like to lecture, berate and dick wave. Yes, i saw the post that was removed. I feel sorry for someone who needs express themselves in such a limited way. What you need to do is get a sense of humor. Just curious, what does ones ability to read maps have to do with anything?
Cheers

And what kind of engine is on the plane you fly, youngster? Makes that great big growly sound the last time I heard it.

I saw a bare R-4360 on a stand at a museum this summer... now that would be a hell of a coffee table!

Re: Old radial engine
All you guys and your new fangled 'internal combustion engines'.
Give me a Triple Expansion reciprocating steam engine with double ended coal fired Scotch boilers--or maybe even some Admirality or Yarrow water tube boilers to add some civility to it.
No radial driver would ever call getting their engine going a 'ritual' after the hours of greasing and wiping the rods and linkages, more hours cleaning flues and fire tubes, and even more hours stoking the boilers and getting usable steam pressure.

Re: Old radial engine
The "waste" steam from the third stage of some triple expansion marine engines was enough to power low pressure steam turbines of several thousand horse power.North Shore wrote:^ Geez, I'd hate to see that powering an aeroplane - what does it produce - 3 or 4 Horsepower?

Re: Old radial engine
You're very close NS. The Sawyer Massey I watched this year driving a saw mill was putting out a whopping 7hp and needed 7 men to operate.

Re: Old radial engine
Oh, sure, but they probably had a boiler the size of a house to produce the steam. Which brings about a question...did the old steamships have freshwater tanks to replenish the boilers? Or did they condense the used steam and reuse the water thus obtained?azimuthaviation wrote:The "waste" steam from the third stage of some triple expansion marine engines was enough to power low pressure steam turbines of several thousand horse power.North Shore wrote:^ Geez, I'd hate to see that powering an aeroplane - what does it produce - 3 or 4 Horsepower?
