First Job: Glass or Steam?
Just ask the poll states; For your first flying job, what did you fly behind? I see this question and/or statement reoccurring on AvCanada. Personally I have yet to see a glass cockpit over the course of a couple thousand hours in my career, let alone my first job. Heck, I have yet to even see a full 6 pack of steam gauges! So let's see what the poll reaps. Was your first job flying behind steam gauges, or a G1000-of-some-sort?

I chalked one up for glass.
Although I instructed for a couple of years on steam gauges, I don't
think it actually counts given the 'spirit' of this poll.

I do consider instructing as a first flying job, and some even make a healthy career out of instructing; You are collecting pay, and do require a CPL. I suppose right seat meat is also more than welcome in the poll! I will also leave the poll as it is, so it shows pretty cut and dry results.

Actually Adam, I remember you moving a Piper Tri-Pacer from Eastern ON to MB...I'm pretty positive that one had a full six pack, and you got some form of pay for that...counts, no?

I was talking about my career working airplanes that make me a living (T4 at the end of the year)...but sure, I suppose if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, yes I have ferried the odd privately registered airplane with a complete 6-pack
. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, steam is steam. I just find it odd to read time and time again (and in another recent thread) that "glass" will likely be the first thing you fly behind. Poll is so far showing that is not the case.

The last three were mixed fleet.
As to what someone could expect in the near future, I would guess that if hiring was strong you could see more glass as the first job (dhc-8, ATR, etc). If hiring is slow, your first job would more likely be steam as you search out that metro, 99, Navajo, beaver, 206, type of job.

Cat. Have you seen what most of the VFR alaskan machines are flying around with? Its mind bendingly beautiful. Get nark to post that pic of his cherokee six.. or I'll hunt down on crack book the ones from my friend flying a 206 and beav up there. Why the hell dont we have this in every otter and beaver here running scheds on the coast??

My first job was flying behind steam, glass didn't exist back then. Poll results will be somewhat skewed, there are lots of us here that started before the glass cockpit was even a twinkle in the engineers eye.

Its just that primary flight training places a large focus on 'basic'
instruments and will most likely continue to do so for quite some
time - regardless of the instrument environment a student will
likely step into once the training is complete. You're going to
have to learn about those standby instruments at some point and
it might as well be at the beginning.
Its because of this artificial adherence to steam gauges that I
decided to disregard instructing. Not because I consider it to be
less valuable that "right seat meat".
