Airbus A-310 Overwing Emergency Exit Question

Post by xchox »

So after we took off... I noticed a pin in our over-wing emergency exit door. Exactly the same as all those other "Remove Before Flight" pins...
I asked the flight attendants, and they seemed confused.

I wasn't worried because should we have gone down and the door wouldn't open, I would know about the pin.

My question is... What is it for? Is it supposed to be removed before flight?

I've messaged all my A310 pilot buddies but the answer is not coming fast enough.

Anyone?

This is not the location for locking out emergency slide. To lockout emergency slide pin location is near door opening handle located underneath a clear removable panel on the door.I believe this may be an storage location but i will check it out next time im onboard an A310 maybe later today.

I too seem to recall it's to store the safety pin for the door. (As you probably know) On the ground, this pin is used to lock out the slide to protect from (an embarassing) inadvertent deployment which then allows for the Emergency Exit door to be opened on the ground. After arming the door by removing the pin from the door arming lever, the the F/A makes sure the pin is inserted in this location so it is readily located should he/she need it. When the pin is removed from the door arming lever, any attempt to open the door also triggers a warning buzzer.

F/As may not want to get into too much details with a passenger regarding emergency exits. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they played dumb. I can assure you, they know the deal with the Emergency Exits.

cheers,
Gino :drinkers:

Is this a TAP airplane? It's weird that they have pouches for stuff ON the emerg door.

It has been removed before flight. They are just storing the pin there until it goes back into the slide disarm mechanism at the end of the flight.

Absolutely correct, the pin is stored in another hole during closing and flight, the plastic guard is then closed over. After landing the disarm lever is moved back to disarm the slide and the pin is replaced with the flag hanging out.

Clearly someone did not store the flag after placing the safety pin in its spot
