Bad luck 3 crashes on same plane

Post by pelmet »

Hopefully not the same pilot each time.....

A14P0035: As the privately operated, float-equipped Cessna 180C (C-GIOK) touched down in Bourgoyne Bay (Saltspring Island, BC) a gust of wind lifted the left wing and the right wing struck the water. Approximately 4 feet of the outboard wing was torn off, including the wingtip and half of the aileron, and the remaining wing skins were wrinkled. Neither occupant was injured and the aircraft was taxied 11 nm back to the Pat Bay water aerodrome(CAP5). This aircraft (serial number 50818), previously registered as C-FFWY, was involved in two similar accidents (A11P0093 and A93P0228). Both accidents involved loss of control on takeoff and one wing striking the water. Both accidents caused substantial damage, and the more recent accident (03 June 2011) also resulted in the aircraft overturning and sinking.

I saw those guys at least twice a week all winter down at Pat Bay. They really took care of their (well-restored) machine. Sad that she's damaged, but really glad to hear that they weren't hurt...

Unlucky for the airplane in other words. Wouldn't be the first plane I've seen that the same pilot has abused repeatedly. Hell, I know of one plane that was crashed by the same pilot twice in one day...

Excuse me? Does that mean, he took off again after the first mishap without any inspections, reports, medical checks, etc.?

I'm sure the first of the day was just a minor crash...

I think a Piper Lance had this experience in the Canadian prairies not too long ago, accepting that the first "crash" was an off airport landing.

Actually, come to think of it, I can recall several times (and pilots) who've performed that feat. I suppose one might consider that some of these might be just very extended crash sequences, rather than separate incidents. Either way, some planes will still be able to fly with substantial damage, something amazing in itself.

If no-one had been there ... at 17 ... hate to admit it, was already in the process (getting ready to take off again with the slight prop imperfection / bent tip after overunning into a vineyard. The flying farmer stopped me: "put her in the barn and I'll give you a lift home .... !! "

Attempting " that feat " has likely something to with all the extra adrenalin .... IMO (in retrospect looking back).

Let me guess. Variable tailwinds on final?

Yes except not / no sign of "variable" either ( was in a C172/Skyhawk plus 2 pax).

Down in the first quarter on the fourth try; a down-slope single runway/1800ft below the Niagara Escarpment with tall trees/wires ahead of TDZE, juicy grass and tires worn 95% of use-full with a 90-degree/steady (West) windsock at the bottom of the field.

Just wasn't as experienced as I'd been convinced ...

The new commercial grow-op down the street probably can use the patent idea for a new end-user product (lol ... got a chuckle out of that one for a good while).

Back on topic here with AVIATION (GRASS stripping). It's impossible to shake the memory of futile moments slippin and sliding nearly sideways left / into-wind before ruddering / toe-braking it back as straight as possible straight to at least meet the end result of end-posts geometrically centered (was just too fast to make that left onto a perpendicular vineyard lane-way at the bottom).

Here it's lucky for passengers (in the #2 accident) where the pilot manages to water-taxi 11nm back to base after the crash damage leaves it upright on the floats.
