Whitehorse FIC ignores ELT?
This past weekend, the Dawson City CARS operator heard an ELT go off for approximately 10 minutes, and then end. He called Whitehorse FIC to report it and allegedly they pretty much told him to ignore it because the signal had went away. The CARS operator called all the major operators on the field to attempt to locate the signal, to no avail. Nothing farther was done.
My hope is that someone called Whitehorse FIC to report an accidental activation and that information was just not passed on to the Dawson CARS, is there any other scenario where it is acceptable to ignore an ELT? Does anyone have any more details? All my information is second hand but I know I would be pretty pissed off had that been my ELT and someone just decided it wasn't a legitimate activation.

It is acceptable to ignore an ELT during the first 5 minutes of every hour for 5 seconds...Redneck_pilot86 wrote:is there any other scenario where it is acceptable to ignore an ELT?

Dawson City ELT
Dawson City, YT (CYDA) community aerodrome radio station (CARS) Observer/Communicator reported an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal in the vicinity of CYDA. Signal stopped breaking squelch on 121.5 MHz at 2312Z. Signal source unknown.

what more could they do tho when it stops transmitting? If no flight plans were overdue and all company aircrafts accounted for.

Yup, satellites no longer monitor 121.5, the 406 system is designed to quickly filter out false alarms. Unless they have a tracker handy while it's transmitting, they have no idea where it's coming from and won't waste resources.

Re: Whitehorse FIC ignores ELT?
I am concerned by this report.
I have been flying out of a mining camp in to Dawson all summer. There are a lot of gold mines up here and most have their own air strip, we have two. This is where they shoot "Gold Rush"
Some mine owners just use a straight piece of road on their property and have it double as a road and air strip. There are a lot of small planes fling up here. You can fly for an hour and not see a road, let along a vehicle or structure.
They are a good and thoughtful group that operated the air radio station.
If they felt the ELT needed reporting, I would think action should have been taken. Admittedly, there are not many options when the ELT goes silent.
