Seasonal Work and Going to School

Post by currysonic »

Hi everyone,

I've been researching operators and gearing myself up for the 2015 season. I would just like your feedback into how possible it would be to finish a University degree during the off season? I realized this was covered before in another thread, however I started to realized most seasons in the Provinces are much longer (April-October for example) than up north where Ice breaks off at around May-Sept (Summer Break Time).

Therefor would it be not possible to work on a degree while working 4 seasons unless I'm in the territories, most likely NWT?

Secondly. How many fresh pilots now a days do you think are willing to work seasonally for 4-5 seasons? I hope that my being around for 4-5 seasons, and the lack(?) of pilots willing to work seasonally would make me an attractive asset, assuming they like my personality.

Thanks in advance!

I think it depends what you're doing. I know guys who have managed to go to school while on medevac rotations however that seems like it would be very challenging.

When you say "fresh", I assume that you mean sub-1000 hours. I'd be willing to guess that there isn't really a lack of young pilots willing to work seasonally. Most low-hour guys will take what they can get and I don't think the idea of being laid off at the end of the season bothers them too much so long as they get their hours in.

Thanks for the reply AWOS. Ill be as fresh as its gets come next year. Maybe 220 hours.

You nailed it about the unemploymeny thing. I dont really mind getting laid off at the end of the season as long as I get the hours (preferably in floats). Though I don't mind not flying the first season.

Hopefully do a trip to Yellowknife and forts such and such come April. If I dont get anything at least hopefully ill get some awesome fishing done...oh and get my name out there at least... but i heard NWT fishing is legendary!!! :smt040
