Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Isn't the waiting list for Q400's quite long or can they buy other airlines' options?

Re: WestJet Starts Regional
I seem to remember a story about Porter and Bombardier and Bombardier said they had an anonymous order for 10 Q400s 'from someone other than Porter, and this was over a year ago.
I wonder where WJ would deploy Q400's?
Calgary - Nanaimo?
Edmonton - Prince George?
Edmonton - Fort St. John?
Regina - Winnipeg?
Winnipeg - Thompson?
Calgary/Edmonton - Salt Lake City UT? and that Delta hub with the new Delta code share?
Calgary - Bellingham WA?
Calgary - Spokane?
Calgary - Portland?
Calgary - Seattle?
Moncton - St. John's NL?
Halifax - Gander?
Halifax - Deer Lake?
Toronto - Fredericton?
Toronto - Saint Jon NB

Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Just came back from Spain with a -300 and had a stopover at Exeter for some issues to be dealt with from Flybe and the guys there told me they are getting rid of all their 400s and going to Embraers.. So there is a big pile of 400s available. Who knows maybe WS will just buy up some smaller carriers to start the flow...Hawkair, CMA, Georgian,...I think it will get pretty interesting in the regional world very quickly.....
Re: WestJet Starts Regional
I can see a lot of flying that could make it's way to a Q400.
In the West:
Vancouver to:
Kelowna
Kamloops
Prince George
Victoria
Whitehorse
Saskatoon
Regina
Calgary to:
Abbotsford
Comox
Victoria
Seattle
Kelowna
Kamloops
Fort Mack
Grand Prairie
Saskatoon
Regina
Winnipeg
Edmonton
Prince Georgo
Edmonton to:
Kelowna
Victoria
Abbotsford
Regina
Saskatoon
Winnipeg
Calgary
Fort Mack
Prince George
I think much of what the 737 does now will transfer over to the Q400. The good news is less of these direct "1 or 2 stop flights" but the bad, less mainline flying.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-in ... le2305963/Calgary-based WestJet will conduct a vote among its 8,500 non-union employees from Jan. 23 to Feb. 3 on the idea of starting a new regional carrier, but the focus will be on the 1,050 pilots casting their ballots. “If the pilots vote No to the [memorandum of agreement], we will not move forward with the regional airline initiative,” management warned in an internal memo.
Re: WestJet Starts Regional
coldand wet: Is that an Air Nostrum -300 you came back with?
A guy I recently spoke with said both Brit Air and Air Nostrum were happy with their CRJ1000's (well it was a Bombardier rep so he might have been biased .....)
Anyway:

If I remember correctly everything at Flybe is watched (fuel consumption being at the top of the list) for cost effectiveness.

Yeah it was an Air Nostrum 315.....They are happy with the 1000s but are like a used carlot as they are kind of working on an exchange basis with Bombardier. They have a REALLY good deal on alot of -200s.....LOL.

The ol' Sarn-Barn -- Sarnia, Ontario is being cited apparently. Maybe I can sling bags and chat up flight attendants in the off season. Come on 2013! Things are lookin' up!

Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Sarnia can't even fill a 1900 .. How is a Q400 suppose to be profitable?
Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Timmins as well. We have a lot of Timmins to Toronto flights now. I wonder if they'd service somewhere else? Timmins to Ottawa would give Bearskin some competition.
Re: WestJet Starts Regional
What are the chances that this "Regional" is really just a plan to start a B-Scale pay scheme and replace the 737s on the less popular routes with cheaper to operate aircraft?

Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Possible, I guess. But, if you look at the other thread on this, there's lots of talk about how they their executive groups works with the employee group, to make sure that the 'owners' are happy. Happy employees are productive ones. Doing an end-run around the pilots like that would forever poison the good working relationship that they seem to have..Rudy wrote:What are the chances that this "Regional" is really just a plan to start a B-Scale pay scheme and replace the 737s on the less popular routes with cheaper to operate aircraft?
Re: WestJet Starts Regional
Rudy were going to replace some 737's with whatever prop we get on some routes, and open new ones. The surpluss 737's will be used to increase frequency on longer routes while expand our vacation brand and US flying. We have a block guarantee for the 737 that at worst case means our fleet will be somewhere around 102 tails. Best case the 737 expansion continues as we now have feed for them.
Sure it will mean FO's will spend more time in the right seat but honestly it's a very well paid good place to chill while the industry evolves around you.
The regional will be a very attractive career move for anyone interested in WJ but doesn't have 4000+ hours. I would think those getting in early will enjoy fast upgrades and good working conditions. Sure it won't appeal to everyone, but then again nothing in life does.
Either way we will know soon enough if This is a go, and have more concrete information in the coming months.

Re: WestJet Starts Regional
I thought that no Big Planes at WestJet would have Baby Planes because they always pulled out on time...... Recall an FA explaining that to passengers once years ago..... Don't recall any news on WJA OTP.....
